Francesca Bria (born November 11, 1977 in Rome ) is an Italian computer scientist and consultant for digital strategy, technology and information policy.

She is President of the Italian National Innovation Fund and Honorary Professor at the Institute for Innovation and Public Purposes at University College London (UCL) in London. She is a senior advisor and ambassador to the United Nations ( UN-Habitat ) for digital cities and digital rights. She was Chief Digital Technology and Innovation Officer of the city of Barcelona and is the founder of the Decode project - an EU-wide initiative to regain the data sovereignty of the citizens. As an honorary professor for technology and innovation policy at University College London, she teaches on the topics of digital sovereignty and human-centered intelligent cities.

biography

Bria has a background in social sciences and innovation economics and an MSc in e-business and innovation from the University College of London, Birkbeck. She was a senior project leader in the Nesta innovation laboratory and EU coordinator of the D-CENT project on direct democracy and social digital currencies, as well as the lead researcher in the DSI project on digital social innovation in Europe.

Bria is a member of the Internet of Things Council and advisor to the European Commission on questions of future Internet and Smart City policy. She is also a member of the EC Expert Group on Open Innovation (OISPG) and a member of the European Research Cluster for the Internet of Things (IERC).

Bria advised the city of Rome and the region Latium in the areas of innovation policy , open technology and open cities. She has taught at several universities in the UK and Italy and has worked as a consultant to governments, public and private organizations on issues relating to technology and innovation policy and its socio-economic and environmental impact. She is also active in various organizations that advocate open access, digital rights and decentralized, data protection-oriented technologies.

In 2018, Forbes magazine named Bria to the list of Europe's Top 50 Women In Tech .
