Sumner Murray Redstone (born May 27, 1923 in Boston , Massachusetts , as Sumner Murray Rothstein , † August 11, 2020 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American entrepreneur . Redstone was the majority owner and chairman of the US company National Amusements . Redstone held a majority stake in Viacom and CBS Corporation through National Amusements and was also Executive Chairman (executive chairman of the board of directors) of both companies until 2016.

Life

Sumner's parents were Michael and Belle Rothstein. In 1940 the family name was changed to Redstone. Sumner's father, Michael Rothstein, owned the Northeast Theater Corporation in Dedham , Massachusetts. This company later became National Amusements . Redstone attended the Boston Latin School . He then went to Harvard College , where he received his bachelor's degree . Redstone then did his military service during World War II and was a member of a team that decoded Japanese messages. After serving in the military, Redstone worked in Washington and attended Georgetown University Law School . He moved to Harvard Law School and earned an LL.B. and the Juris Doctor . After graduation, Redstone worked in Washington for the Justice Department and then went into the private sector. After a few years he moved to his father's company, where he rose in the following years. For several decades he was considered one of the most influential decision-makers in the American entertainment industry.

In 1999, after 52 years of marriage, he divorced his first wife, Phyllis Gloria Raphael. They have two children together, Shari Redstone (* 1954), current chairwoman of ViacomCBS , and Brent Redstone (* 1951), who works as a lawyer. In 2002 he married Paula Fortunato, 39 years his junior, for the second time. In 2008, Redstone filed for divorce, which became final in 2009.

In July 2010, Redstone made headlines with a caper around a girls band and Viacom company MTV .

Beginning in February 2016 joined Redstone health reasons from his position as Executive Chairman (executive chairman of the board back) of CBS and Viacom. Before that, he had to undergo a mental aptitude test by court order. He has severe cognitive deficits, is no longer able to speak and write clearly and to make decisions about his own health. He was succeeded by the respective CEOs of the two companies, Leslie Moonves and Philippe P. Dauman . Redstone's daughter Shari Redstone retained her post as Vice Chairwoman. Sumner Redstone received the title of "Chairman Emeritus " of the two companies. In May 2016 Viacom decided to cut his remuneration for his position as "Chairman emeritus". He earned two million US dollars at Viacom in 2015 alone, up from 13 million US dollars the year before.

His estimated net worth was $ 5.2 billion in 2016 , according to Forbes .

Redstone died at his home in Los Angeles at the age of 97.
