background

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , BAFTA had already announced in mid-June 2020 that its film awards ceremony would be postponed from February 14 to April 11, 2021. At the same time, the 2021 Academy Awards and the 2021 Golden Globe Awards had also been postponed. In times of lockdown regulations and unusual cinema premieres, smaller, independent film productions as well as documentaries, foreign language and British productions should be given the opportunity to qualify for the British Film Academy Awards 2021. Other changes made by the film committee included: Allow productions that were released before UK cinemas closed, regardless of how many days they were shown in theaters. Films were also allowed that were only released on video-on-demand platforms (the titles had to have been available online to the UK audience for at least 30 days). The condition was that the theatrical release would be rescheduled after the opening of the British cinemas within a certain period. Films that only open in British cinemas after the lockdown are said to have been shown at least once every seven days.

In addition, the BAFTA announced on September 24, 2020, inter alia. to review and independently verify their selection process and the selection of their members for the film awards ceremony within a seven-month process. The decision was made immediately after the nominations for the 73rd award were announced on January 7, 2020, where there was considerable criticism due to a lack of diversity. At the British Academy Film Awards, for example, only white actors were considered in the categories for best leading and supporting roles. Also, only male directors were represented in the Best Director category . In 2019, BAFTA was the first major film award to adopt criteria for diversity and inclusion, based on the requirements of the British Film Institute (BFI). Upon review, BAFTA concluded that it would make 120 changes. So, inter alia. up to 1000 new academy members from underrepresented groups in the next two years. Members should also be given the opportunity to review all films submitted. A new, three-stage nomination process has been resolved for all categories, before the first round of which the voting members must receive the necessary training for the voters.
