Nick Rowland

Nick Rowland (* around 1990 in Stamford ) is a British film director and screenwriter .

Life

Nick Rowland was born in Stamford in the East Midlands . Prior to moving to film, Rowland dabbled in a career as a professional rally driver, competing in races across the UK and even China. After his sponsor dropped out in 2008, he decided to dedicate himself to filmmaking.

He attended the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield, where Paul Thomas Anderson and Danny Boyle were among the lecturers during his studies . His student film Dancing in the Ashes , in which a young Jewish ballerina is torn from her environment and sent to a Nazi death camp, won the 2013 Royal Television Society Awards. His short film Out of Sight received a nomination at the Sundance Film Festival . For his short film Group B , in which he revived his previous career as a rally driver and which is about a participant in the same group in the mid-1980s, Rowling received a nomination for the Student Academy Awards . His short film Slap won an award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and also received BAFTA and BIFA nominations. All of his short films were made during his time at NFTS.

After his degree there in 2015, he served as a director for television series such as Ripper Street and Hard Sun operates. In September 2019 Rowling's crime film Calm with Horses celebrated its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival . It is an adaptation of the short story of the same name by the Irish writer Colin Barrett, which was published in the Young Skins collection in 2013 . Calm with Horses is Rowling's debut feature film.
