action

The former boxer Douglas Armstrong, known as Arm, now works after the end of his professional career in a small coastal town in Ireland for the Devers family, who deal in drugs. He even lives with them and is superficially accepted as part of the "family". The intimidating arm with its massive build and close-cropped skull is not only the best buddy, but also the right hand of Dympna Devers, the eldest son and future head of the family. He uses him as a thug and collector. Dympna believes that in his drug deals he has to do worse things than poor in his job.

Arm has a son with his ex-girlfriend Ursula. 5-year-old Jack has autism and Arm loves both of them, even though it is not always easy for him to endure his son's seizures. Ursula would like to move to the other side of Ireland, where there are better facilities for the boy. She plans to move to distant Cork , where Jack will get the care he needs. At the same time Arm learns of Ursula's plans, he is hired by the Devers to do the dirty work to commit murder. It's the first time Arm is supposed to kill someone, and it's also someone he's known for a long time.

production

The film is based on the short story of the same name by Irish writer Colin Barrett, which was published in the Young Skins Collection in 2013 and was published in a German translation by Hans-Christian Oeser under the title Young Wolves in 2016 .

Directed by Nick Rowland , who made his feature film debut following several short films including Slap , which was nominated at the British Academy Film Awards in 2015 , and working on television series with Calm with Horses . Barrett's short story was adapted for the film by Joe Murtagh , with whom Rowland has worked since studying at the National Film and Television School . For the short film Group B , which they jointly realized , Murtagh was nominated for a student Oscar. The title of the short story and film Calm with Horses refers to the way Arm's son Jack behaves during therapy on the horse and how riding calms him, who often screams for no apparent reason .

British actor and singer-songwriter Cosmo Jarvis plays "Arm" Armstrong in Douglas. Barry Keoghan took on the role of his best friend and guardian Dympna Devers. Niamh Algar plays Arms' ex-girlfriend Ursula, who is also the mother of their 5-year-old son Jack, played by Kiljan Tyr Moroney . Ned Dennehy , Anthony Welsh , Simone Kirby and David Wilmot can also be seen in other roles .

The film is produced by DMC Film and Element Pictures in association with Altitude Film Entertainment and is co-funded by Film4 and Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland with the participation of the Western Region's Audiovisual Producer's Fund / WRAP Fund. Reviews

The film has so far won over 94 percent of all Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 7.4 out of a possible 10 points.

Cosmo Jarvis plays Douglas "Arm" Armstrong

Kaleem Aftab from the online cinema magazine Cineuropa thinks that the strength of the film lies in its calm, with which he concentrates on the dynamics between the characters. The plot feels a little predictable and shows a world that cinema has dealt with many times. Nick Rowland's approach of focusing on the people in his film and letting them see a glimmer of hope in a vicious circle that runs their lives, however, makes Calm with Horses more than a standard crime thriller.

Mark Kermode of the Guardian writes that the film, set in rural Ireland, has something of the "West Country Western" from Sam Peckinpah's Cornish epic Straw Dogs , reminiscent of Andrew Haighs in its portrayal of gloomy realities that are permeated by a redeeming transcendence Lean on Pete or Chloé Zhaos The Rider . The game of Cosmo Jarvis , who acts with a few words but with extremely eloquent physicality, Kermode compares with the powerful presence of Matthias Schoenaerts in Bullhead combined with the vulnerability of Jason Patric in After Dark, My Sweet .
