Susan Wokoma

Susan Indiaba Wokoma (born December 31, 1987 in London , England ) is a British actress . She is best known for starring in Chewing Gum and Crazyhead .

Life

Wokoma is the daughter of Nigerian parents with an older sister who sings in musicals. She grew up in Elephant and Castle in south London.

She enrolled for the National Youth Theater during the summer vacation and took a weekend acting course in Marylebone , where she taught singing from Gareth Malone, known from The Choir . In 2002 she took part in the reality show Serious Jungle , in which teenagers went on an expedition in the jungle. She had her first role in 2006 in the television film That Summer Day about the terrorist attacks in London in 2005 . At the age of 19 she came to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art , which is why her father kicked her out at home. She graduated in 2010.

In 2012, her father died of a stroke while filming for Half of a Yellow Sun , after which she visited her mother's village in Nigeria and met her relatives.

After a few smaller television roles, she had her breakthrough in Michaela Coel's series Chewing Gum . In 2016, she starred alongside Cara Theobold in Crazyhead , for which she was recognized by the Royal Television Society. In 2017 she was listed by Forbes on the European 30 Under 30 list and named Breakthrough Brit by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts .

She has been playing in Porters since 2017 . As a voice actress , she spoke a role in BrainFreeze from 2015 to 2017 , then in the video games Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Princess Shuri von Wakanda and World of Warcraft : Battle for Azeroth Princess Talanji. In 2018 she wrote and produced the short film Love the Sinner , in which she played the mother of the leading role. She also wrote an episode for The Reluctant Landlord , Jokes for Porters, and was on the script team for the second season of Sex Education . In 2019 she appeared in Year of the Rabbit and Dark Money . Her own family sitcom and comedy about abortion are currently in the works.
