Sex on the Beach 2 (Original title: The Inbetweeners 2 ) is a British comedy released in 2014 and the sequel to Sex on the Beach from 2011 , which is based on the E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners . It was written and directed by series creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris.

The film is about four school friends, played by Simon Bird , Joe Thomas, James Buckley and Blake Harrison, who meet again on vacation in Australia . In interviews, the film's writers and actors announced that this would be the last film.

action

Wills, Neils, and Jay's friends have all broken up since the events of the previous film, and Simon is unhappy with his girlfriend Lucy, who has become obsessive and abusive. Simon and Will are depressed and ostracized at college, Neil works for a bank and Jay is doing a gap year in Australia . He emails Neil when he and Simon visit Will, claiming that he is now a top DJ, owns a popular nightclub, lives in a luxury mansion, and has sex with many partners every day. He finally convinces her to visit him in Australia during the Easter break.

When they arrive at the club, it turns out that Jay actually only works as a toilet attendant. Also, Jay actually lives in a tent in the front yard of his uncle Bryan's house. At the club, Will meets Katie, an old friend from his private school days who backpacks and convinces him to join her.

The next day the four friends travel to a youth hostel in Byron Bay in a Peter André fan car because Will wants to follow Katie there. He tries to make friends with one of the backpackers, Ben, but is unsuccessful when he realizes that he is not a real backpacker, just a tourist. Upon arrival, Will skyps his mother and notices that someone else is in their house, which she denies and hastily hangs up.

The following day the boys and the backpackers visit a water park where Jay wants to find his ex-girlfriend Jane again. Park officials explain that Jane found a new upstate job, but they don't know exactly where Jay can find her. Lucy explains to Simon via Skype that Jane works on a stud farm in the distant village of Birdsville , whereupon the boys go there.

Will, however, decides to stay with Katie. However, he continues to struggle to integrate himself into the spiritual activities of fellow travelers and notices that Katie is hooking up with several men, causing him to unleash a tirade of hate on Ben. After all, Katie has sex with Ben in the bed next to him.

Will leaves the hostel the next day and travels to his friends by plane. While driving to Jane's workplace, her car runs out of fuel in the middle of the outback and the four try unsuccessfully to find water or help. Desperately thirsty, Simon wants to drink Neil's urine, but Neil is too dehydrated to urinate. The group hold hands when they realize they are very likely to die. After all, they are saved by Jane and her colleagues. It turns out that they were only stranded for two hours. Jane realizes how far Jay has come to win her back, but although she is touched by the gesture, she doesn't take it back.

Back at Jay's uncle's house, the boys find out their parents traveled there when they heard about their children's near-death experience . The boys are shocked to find that Mr. Gilbert (their senior class teacher and Will's nemesis ) is there too. Will's mother announces that she and Gilbert are in a relationship - much to Will's horror and the amusement of the other three friends. Meanwhile, Jay finally shows some backbone and hits his uncle for constantly insulting Jane because of her weight, thus starting an argument between his uncle and father. Lucy breaks up with Simon on Skype because she is now in a relationship with his "best friend" from the University of Pete. Simon cheers and hangs up carefree.

The four main characters go to Byron Bay - together with the backpackers

A montage at the end of the film shows how the four boys decide to travel to Vietnam , among other places. When they return to England, Neil begins a relationship with one of the fellow travelers and Will's mother reveals that she and Gilbert are engaged. Will tries to run back to the plane, shocked, but is beaten down by the security guards.

origin

Though originally intended to be the final end of the series, the unexpected popularity and high income of Sex on the Beach sparked speculation about a sequel. Those rumors started in early September 2011 while the film was still in theaters and were denied by the writers and actors. At about the same time, producer Christopher Young noted the possibility of another film based on the series, saying, “If there's a sequel it'll come from the creative elements, we've talked about it. In the near future, people will scatter and do other things, but I'm sure in the long run a continuation is quite possible. It wouldn't be immediate, but definitely not ruled out. ”Co-author Damon Beesley later admitted,“ We didn't know how successful it would be or whether it would work on the big screen. But they turned into big movie characters, people took care of them and came back to see them multiple times - and that's rarely seen in the cinema. The idea of not doing another part seemed unimaginable to many people. ”The actors had mixed feelings about a sequel. Although Buckley and Thomas were put off by the success of the film, it was reading the script that convinced Harrison and Bird.

Ian Morris drew inspiration for the film from his own experience as an exchange student on the Australian Gold Coast . He describes it as a place "where people go to get drunk, pick up women and get drunk again."

development

On August 21, 2012 it was announced that the sequel was in the early stages of pre-production. On November 8, series creators Morris and Beesley announced that a script was being written and that it was about halfway through. On May 1, 2013 it was announced that, although no contracts had yet been signed, a sequel was in the planning phase, presumably playing in Australia and will be released sometime in 2014.

On August 2, 2013, the continuation for August 2014 was officially confirmed. The series' Facebook page revealed on March 15, 2014 that the sequel would start on August 6, 2014.

On May 9th, an English teaser was published in which the characters drive through the outback and call a group of Aborigines fire wanker ( fire wankers). An official trailer was posted on the film's official Facebook home page on June 18, showing a little more of the plot.

filming

Filming began in Australia on December 7, 2013 and moved to the UK in January 2014. Parts of the film were shot in the isolated outback settlement of Marree , South Australia , a place with no cell phone service or internet.

Ben Palmer , the director of the first film, was with Simon Pegg's film It's Complicated ..! busy, so Morris and Beesley directed Sex on the Beach 2 . Bird said the actors were initially discouraged by Palmer's absence and unsure about directing Morris and Beesley due to their lack of experience in the field.

Marris considered filming the Australian scenes in South Africa because of the comparatively high costs in Australia , as there were fewer resources available for the sequel than for the predecessor despite the higher budget.

The circumstances of filming in Australia were also different from those during the filming of Sex on the Beach . While the locations of the first part were all within 10 minutes of the hotel, those of the second part were a 3-hour flight or a 9-hour drive from each other. While filming in the Outback, the Australian crew had two doctors and 40 liters of IV fluids ready, but the only incident was when Buckley thought he was having a heart attack , which turned out to be a digestive disorder from chips and beer. The water park scenes were filmed in Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast . Thomas described these scenes as "particularly challenging".

When asked if he was ever averse to the footage because of the public dislike, in part, Morris said the crew's attitude was, “Let's shoot it all, if it feels too much when we see it, we can still cut it out. "

success

Sex on the Beach 2 grossed $ 4.6 million on opening day, August 6, 2014, in the UK, setting a new record for the best movie launch day of a comedy. By the end of the week, it had topped the charts with grossing $ 21 million. In doing so, it overtook Transformers: Age of Extinction ($ 19.7 million) as the film with the best week of premieres in 2014 in Great Britain ; Measured in terms of box office income, that was nevertheless less than the $ 22.2 million in the opening week of the first part of 2011. The film also topped the box office in the second week, in which it grossed $ 16.6 million. In the third week, it dropped to second place behind Lucy , which was republished.

In the opening week in Australia , Sex on the Beach 2 grossed $ 3.1 million, pushing Guardians of the Galaxy to second place. He dropped to second place in week two, while Guardians of the Galaxy returned to the top.

In Germany, Sex on the Beach 2 entered the cinema charts at number 11 with a box-office result of 393,000 euros. The first film in 2011 had brought in 930,000 euros.

As of October 12, 2014, the film grossed $ 55,652,783 in the UK, $ 6,598,273 in Australia, $ 473,316 in New Zealand and approximately € 676,000 in Germany. That adds up to total sales of $ 63.8 million.

With grossing $ 55.6 million, Sex on the Beach 2 was the most successful British or Irish film on the domestic market in 2014 (ahead of Paddington ($ 47 million)). After The LEGO Movie and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, it was the third most successful film ever in Great Britain and Ireland in 2014.

Overall, Sex on the Beach 2 could not build on the success of the first part. Worldwide revenues were $ 63.8 million, almost 30% below those of the first part ($ 88 million). In Germany the film only made a quarter of the 3 million, in Austria only a third of the 1 million in the first part.

Nevertheless, with a budget of around £ 5 million (about € 7.1 million), the sequel can be considered a financial success.

criticism

Germany

Kathrin Häger from Filmdienst writes

“Actually, the debut film by Iain Morris and Damon Beesley, who wrote the scripts for the series and the first film, is itself like a teenager who is constantly trying to push his limits. Except that these are exclusively in the fields of bad taste. For the fact that so much lower things are negotiated here, the (film) craft level is astonishingly high. Probably thanks to the generous budget for a sequel whose predecessor became a surprise hit in the UK in 2011. The timing, editing, camera work and dialogue direction are all right - even if there isn't much left of the fast puns and battles of the original in the German dubbed version.

This body comedy scene should represent the absolute low point in mainstream cinema: an irritable bowel leads to an embarrassing mishap at the entrance of a water slide, of all places, and the chase between man and faeces begins - between the slipping will and the excretion of his friend Neil, who is ashamed stops at the top of the slide entrance.

In terms of quality, that exceeds many Adam Sandler productions. In terms of age, however, the film could be aimed at the same target group, namely someone who still goes to the bathing paradise to slide, but actually only has sex orgies on their mind - i.e. boys between 12 and 16. Women are either hysterical or provocative or overdrawn. Animals lick off human body parts that they normally try to reach from within themselves. And the step of a little boy in the water park is suddenly where Simon's head is due to a push from Neil. Sodomy and pedophilia allusions are the new breaking of taboos in the literal 'sub-genre' of teenage clothes, which is ready to sink quite low in order to even be able to raise the bar at faecal height. "

Günter H. Jekubzik writes for Filmtabs

“This especially obnoxious teenage humor Sex on the Beach 2 is indescribable for little boys who dream of sex, but who also think it's great to throw diarrhea in their faces. The four idiots of the film behave accordingly like ten year olds in the unhappy, because unsatisfied, bodies of twenty year olds.

The four idiots are after some girls in the cooler's paradise, but crucial in the sequence of pretty unbelievable embarrassments is the amount of feces, is that dying of thirst in the outback is just one reason to pee in each other's mouth and so on. The variation of particularly stupid, but by no means funny faces is just so easily mastered as an actor.

It was particularly shocking, however, how much money was apparently spent on this crap after the first film 'Sex on the Beach' based on a British sitcom was a surprising success. It seems that such films belong in the cinematic biography of every young pimple hatcher and are therefore a lucrative market segment. But the added just stupid was popsicles in the late seventies that bad? Can 'man' approach his sexuality only through nasty things and anal excretions? Although - that's the particularly perfidious thing about this uptight film - Sex on the Beach 2 ultimately has nothing to do with sexuality and therefore does not keep the promise after buying the cinema ticket. "

Bianka Piringer from Cinefacts says

“Four young English are looking for sex, partying, adventure and struggling through a thicket of embarrassing failures. With this formula, the comedy 'Sex on the Beach', which is based on a TV series, was a box-office hit in the UK in 2011. Now follows 'Sex on the Beach 2', in which the screenwriters and producers of the series, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, make their directorial debut. Once again, the peculiar, wild mixture of vulgar bragging and realistic situation comedy is convincing.

This is flanked by the occasional disgusting humor, which even for the genre is bottomlessly hearty - and at least not boring. Overall, the comedy is mixed, sometimes stupid, sometimes funky and exciting. The underexposed Neil is left behind too often.

Interestingly, the film gets going on the go and creates an atmosphere that is like a slight intoxication. The carelessness of these comedy characters is no longer seen in contradiction to the serious problems that await them. There is even a very dramatic scene in which the four face imminent death in the desert. The film is not afraid of touching serious issues just because it remains a comedy. Or getting upset with Will when people resort to lying speech bubbles, for the sake of simplicity.

He concludes that the British comedy Sex on the Beach 2 offers a fun reunion with the four cheerful loser friends from England. In this sequel, too, the mixture of vulgar exaggeration and realistic conflicts works. "

Great Britain

Robbie Collin of the Daily Telegraph gave the film four out of five stars and says "Perhaps the biggest compliment you can give the film, aside from how damn funny it is, is that it is unmistakably film-like, with a smooth storyline and pizzazz and ceremonially portrayed moments of disgust like from an action film play. ” Mike McCahill gave the film three stars in the Guardian . He criticized the treatment of the female characters and said: "Some of the thoughts that one made about penis jokes could have been redirected into the development of female counterparts beyond harpies and objects of pleasure." Unlike Collins, he found that Sex on the Beach 2 is more like a TV series than a film: "Like the first film, Part 2 never loses its resemblance to the E4 prime time series, including the advertising-ready fade-outs and the same jokes ... the vehicles could not bring them to a larger audience, With a little more ambition? "Chris Hewitt of Empire Magazine gave the film four stars out of five and sums it up as" The Fantastic Four leave us on a shit-stained, piss-soaked, sun-burned high that more than compensates for the usual mistakes to be a true one To be contender for the funniest film of the year. Four stars, wanker ”.

There was one negative review from Graham Young of the Birmingham Mail , who found the humor too monotonous: "Damon Beesley and Iain Morris co-directed the sequel, which lacks the emotional arc to create momentum ... Yes, it can be funny and you have to be a prude not to laugh ... but the endless, alliterating phrases for sex and countless crude gags weaken the characters and make the mood boringly suggestive. Just like Nick Frost's Cuban Fury earlier this year, Sex on the Beach 2 creates a fun premise - and then ruins it. ” Writing for The Observer , Jonathan Romney gave the film two stars out of five and summed it up:“ England most popular television comedy quartet make another trip. The result is a mixture of shit, pee and vomit, rampant misogyny, 'ironic' rampant misogyny, rampant irony and the old theme of fear of sex (especially among those over 25) ”. But he predicted that, like the first film, Part 2 would be a financial success. Tom Huddleston gave the film one of five stars in Time Out and said: “ Sex on the Beach 2 is riddled with contempt: for its characters, for the audience and above all for the entire female sex. The fact that a 2014 film can still get away with portraying women as stupid, unhappy sluts or bulldozing scrapers is truly incredible. "

Australia

In Australia, Matthew Toomey, a film critic for 612 ABC Brisbane , gave Sex on the Beach 2 a B +. He says: “Don't expect a deep, thoughtful narrative. This is just a group of horny teenagers who do really stupid things. Each for themselves ... but it was entertaining. At first I was shocked - and that's not easy considering how many films I've seen. It took the whole thing further than I thought and I strongly recommend watching the film in a full theater. The reaction from the audience is hilarious. ”Louise Keller of Urban Cinefile wrote a mixed review, stating that the film takes a long time to“ get going ”because of the“ silly goofs. ”Nonetheless, she concludes that "There is a real affection with which the filmmakers portray their characters, and as a result of which the level of fecal humor is somewhat weakened." Simon Miraudo of Quickflix gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and called it "the biggest foolish thing since the Simpsons of Australia Coasts reached ”. The film is "a little less sensitive to his female roles than before, but the scene in which Will is chased down the water slide by Kot makes madness without handicap competition with the best of all shit-in-the-water gags."

Leigh Paatsch gave the film a star in the Herald Sun. He criticizes the cast and describes the main characters as "Men who are supposed to portray 20-year-olds but are played by people who look like 30+. They then behave as if they weren't even 10. "Paatsch also found the film hostile to women and says" the derogatory tone in which women are talked about (and often portrayed) is mercilessly crude. Sometimes even hateful. ”A mixed review by Philippa Hawker of the Sydney Morning Herald concludes that“ the Australian elements were hastily thrown in and seemed random: the film could have been set in any country that has a water park and a place one can get lost. But as a hymn to the bond of men and an answer to the question of what happens when a fucking sausage hits a water slide, Sex on the Beach 2 is a precise craft. "

DVD and Blu-ray

Sex on the Beach 2 was released on DVD and Blu-ray on March 27, 2015.

estate

In an interview with the BBC , Thomas said when asked if a third part would be an option for him, that Morris and Beesley had been "very adamant" that the series would end. He added of his co-stars, “I think we're going to work together in some ways. There's a cohesion here that would be stupid to waste. You don't get this solidarity very often with other colleagues and we have it and it's a valuable thing ”.

In the same interview, the two series creators answered the question of whether the series was definitely over with a "Yes!" Morris stated that “the time is right. After the first film I wanted to hear more from Jay, Will, Neil and Simon, but this time I think it's enough. There's more than enough Jay in this world, ”Beesley added,“ We always saw the end of the story when they disappear and begin their adult lives. And I think in this movie they get to that point. "

Sex on the Beach 2 was accused of being responsible for a rise in a custom called logging or Code Brown , deliberate defecation in swimming pools to piss off other guests, based on a scene in the film.
