The Inbetweeners - Our virgin years (Original title: The Inbetweeners ) is a British sitcom that was broadcast in three seasons from 2008 to 2010 on E4 . The series was written by Damon Beesley and Iain Morris . It is about the life of suburban teenager Will ( Simon Bird ) and his three friends from the fictional school Rudge Park Comprehensive.

The series was so successful in Great Britain that the feature film The Inbetweeners Movie was produced, which was released in 2011. Due to the very successful box office result, the sequel The Inbetweeners 2 followed in 2014 .

Since The Inbetweeners has not yet been broadcast on television in Germany, the films were marketed as Sex on the Beach and Sex on the Beach 2 . The German DVD release of the series, in turn, is entitled The Inbetweeners - Our virginal years , whereby a reference to the films is established through the extensive inclusion of the film logo in the DVD cover (although these were made after the series).

The Inbetweeners was nominated for Best Situation Comedy at the British Academy Television Awards in 2009 and 2010 . In 2010 she won the Audience Award, the only award that is decided by the audience. A year later, the series received the Best Sitcom Prize at the British Comedy Awards .

development

Beesley and Morris met as producers on Channel 4's The 11 O'Clock Show . After serving as commissioners on Channel 4, with Morris leading the peep show , the two of them founded their own company, Bwark Productions, in 2004 and developed their first television series with The Inbetweeners . A pilot film called Baggy Trousers was produced in 2006 and directed by James Bobin .

E4 aired the first season in May 2008 and Channel 4 repeated it in November of that year. The second season ran from April 2 to May 7, 2009. A third season was commissioned by E4, started on September 1, 2010 and ended on October 18, 2010. The first episode of the third season had the highest viewership, that an original Commission proposal from E4 ever had.

After the end of the third season, those responsible and the actors announced that a fourth season was very unlikely. However, a film and two specials will be produced that will take place after the third season and show the group on vacation in Malia , Crete .

Episodes

The three seasons can be viewed by viewers from the UK and Ireland on Channel 4's video platform 4oD, YouTube and SeeSaw. Individual episodes are also available for purchase in the UK iTunes store.

Movie

The sequel The Inbetweeners 2 followed in 2014 ( marketed as Sex on the Beach 2 in Germany ), which is set in Australia. It started in Great Britain on August 6, 2014 and in Germany on October 30, 2014.

The first episode of the second season was shown on E4 at 10:00 p.m. on April 2, 2009 and was viewed by 958,000 viewers. In addition, there were a further 234,000 viewers at 11 p.m. on the time-shifted channel E4 + 1, which led to a total viewer number of 1.2 million, the highest audience rating for E4 in 2009.

Joe McNally praised the British daily The Independent for the "extremely precise dialogue that perfectly captures the feeling of adolescence" and Will Dean of the Guardian wrote that the series "captures the pathetic male high school experience very well." The series is often successful with E4s Youth Drama Skins Compared; Commentators said that " The Inbetweeners' portrayal of a boring suburb is closer [than skins ] to the dull teenage years of most of us than the decadent time we wished we had."

On September 13, 2010, the first episode of the third season aired on E4 and achieved a record 2.6 million viewers at 10:00 p.m., the highest audience rating for a show on E4 until 2011 Glee broke that record.
