Jack Fabian Peñate [ pənˈjɑːteɪ ] (born September 2, 1984 in London ) is a British singer-songwriter.

Live and act

Peñate grew up in an artistic family; he is himself the grandson of the writer Mervyn Peake . When he was nine he was in the musical Oliver! in the West End of London as a member of the youth gang. As a teenager, he played with school friends in a band called Jack's Basement . The later Maccabees guitarist Felix White was one of them.

During his university days, where he embarked on a hopeless study of Latin, which he finally gave up, he started a musical solo career. He signed a contract with the Young Turks label and released his debut single Second, Minute or Hour , which immediately launched him successfully. The larger indie label XL Recordings then signed him and released his debut album Matinée . It reached number 7 in the UK charts, as did the first single, Torn on the Platform .

While Peñate's first album still contained pop music in the tradition of the 1980s with influences from ska to rockabilly, he made a major change in style for his second album and accordingly named it Everything Is New . African and Brazilian elements and even house are included and the guitar is no longer the main instrument. Although this album and two singles also hit the charts, it lagged behind his debut.

Jack Peñate has two accompanying musicians, bassist Joel Porter and drummer Alex Robins, with whom he always performs.

With artists like Lily Allen , Jamie T , Kate Nash , Adele , he is often counted among the group of artists who sing in " Estuary English ". This is a style developed by young British musicians in 2006/2007 where they do not lose their original accent while singing, as many other artists do.
