Sex Education ( English for sex education ) is a British television series by the video-on-demand provider Netflix . The series is about the young Otis Milburn, who is engaged in sex therapy with a classmate at his school underground.

The first season was released on Netflix on January 11, 2019. On January 31, 2019, a second season of the series was ordered, which has been available since January 17, 2020. In February 2020, Netflix extended the series for a third season.

action

Otis Milburn is the son of the well-known sex therapist Jean Milburn, but himself rather shy and inexperienced. After helping a classmate with a sex problem, he starts a sex therapy service for the classmates of the Moordale Secondary with Maeve Wiley, who lives alone and impoverished . Over a school year, the love and sexual problems of Otis, Maeve, Adam, Otis 'best friend Eric Effiong, Otis' mother Jean and other students are treated.

Location

The series was shot in southeast wales , near Cardiff and Newport . The setting is supposed to be a bit ambiguous though, the director “really enjoys the fact that [Moordale] is like Everywhere-ville , that it feels both British and American, that we kind of have 80s clothes and yet there are smartphones ".

Cast and dubbing

The German dubbing was created under the dialogue book by Irina von Bentheim , Marion Machado Quintela , Matthias Böck and Anett Ecklebe and under the dialogue direction by Irina von Bentheim by the dubbing company SDI Media Germany GmbH in Berlin .

On the first day of school after the vacation, Eric tells Otis that all of the other classmates had sex during the vacation except the two of them. Meanwhile, Adam cannot cum while having sex with his girlfriend Aimee and fakes an orgasm. When Adam and Otis have to work together on a school project, Adam visits Otis and discovers his mother Jean's study. Adam tells everyone the next day that she is a sex therapist. Otis and Maeve, trying to calm him down, find Adam in an abandoned toilet building who has a painful erection after taking three Viagra pills. Adam shares how he feels while Otis gives him advice: Don't let the pressure that he has a big penis and that his father is the headmaster put him under pressure. The next time Adam has sex with Aimee, he will have an orgasm. She separates from him anyway because he showed everyone his penis in the school cafeteria. Adam breaks a new deal with Otis to stop bullying Eric and continues to harass him at school. Maeve suggests that Otis offer anonymous sex therapy to the students outside Moordale. She would take care of business matters and the two would split the profits.

Otis, Eric, and Maeve go to Aimee's house party to solicit clients for their therapy classes, but it doesn't work very well at first. While Otis is helping a couple with their problems, Eric is filmed using bananas to teach two friends of his crush Anwar oral sex . Meanwhile, Jean sniffs around Otis' things and finally drives to Aimee's property, where she meets Adam. He sneaks into the party and then knocks Aimee's new friend unconscious with a vase that contains the ashes of Aimee's grandmother. Maeve finds out she got pregnant from Jackson, with whom she occasionally had sex. When several students ask Otis about therapy the day after the party, Otis and Maeve start the “sex clinic”, which they had almost given up.

Jean is outraged when Remi, Otis' father, who lives in the United States and goes on a book tour alone for their book together, sends her books to be signed. She also continues to sniff around Otis' room. Meanwhile, Lily, a lonely girl interested in fantasy stories, wants her first time, no matter who she is with. She visits Eric, whom she knows through the school swing band, and wants to have sex with him. However, since this is homosexual, the two dress in drag instead , whereby Eric's father catches them.

Maeve decides to have an abortion and asks Otis to pick her up afterward. Otis is too early and is now going shopping with an anti-abortion woman. Here, too, he lets his therapeutic skills play out. At the clinic, Maeve meets Sarah, who has had multiple abortions at the clinic, and becomes friends with her. Adam sees praise for his father Jackson, who triumphs as a school champion in swimming.

4th 4th Episode 4 Episode 4 Ben Taylor Laurie Nunn & Laura Neal
Otis wants to help Tanya and Ruthie, a lesbian couple, when Ruthie is having no fun having sex; he also notices that he is in love with Maeve. Meanwhile, Jackson offers him money to give him tips to impress Maeve, which Otis is initially not fond of, but then agrees. Jean meets the Swedish plumber Jakob. For the first time in a long time, she feels the need for more than just sex. Jacob's daughter Ola, who Otis doesn't find unattractive, catches Otis doing lesbian porn (as research for Tanya and Ruthie). Eric meets Adam going for a walk and accidentally causes Madam, Adam's family dog, to run away. Otis still can't help Tanya and Ruthie. Now he doesn't want to help Jackson to conquer Maeve any more and gives him the insidious advice to make his declaration of love big. Maeve mentioned earlier that she hated such gestures, which she had previously disparagingly mentioned. Maeve, however, is touched by Jackson's proposal that the two become a couple.
5 5 Episode 5 Episode 5 Kate Herron Sophie Goodhart & Laura Hunter
Maeve and Jackson have been together for a month now, so Jackson's parents invite them over to their home. However, when his mothers ask about Maeve's family, Maeve no longer feels well and flees. She later takes Jackson to her trailer and tells her about her family and life. Jackson then describes his problems with one of his mothers' pressure to perform. Meanwhile, a picture of a vagina is going around the school with a threat that the girl's name will be revealed to the whole school the next day. Ruby, a bully, hires Maeve and Otis to find the sender of the picture. On the occasion of Eric's birthday, Eric and Otis want to see Hedwig and the Angry Inch and dress up in drag . When Maeve gets a clue who could be the sender of the nude picture, Otis abandons Eric and questions suspects at Aimee. It turns out that Ruby's friend Olivia sent the photo because she was annoyed by Ruby's constant nagging about her. Otis missed the bus into town. Eric, who doesn't feel like partying anymore, is stolen from the bus station and beaten up by homophobes while running home . He is picked up by Otis' mother because he feels safe with her. However, when he finds out that Otis left him in the lurch because of Maeve, the two get into a serious argument.
6th 6th Episode 6 Episode 6 Kate Herron Laurie Nunn & Freddy Syborn
In a flashback, Otis catches his father having sex with one of his patients as a young boy and reveals this to his mother, which leads to his parents' divorce. In the present, his father says that Otis should lose his virginity as soon as possible. As a result, he tries to have his first time with Lily but has a panic attack as he remembers his childhood and his parents quarreling. Eric and Otis are still falling out. The former tries to be more “straight” (i.e. heterosexual) after the attack, has a nervous breakdown in the swing band rehearsal , yells at his teacher and beats his crush Anwar in the hallway, so that he is suspended from school. Adam wins an essay writing competition , which he has paid but Maeve to write his contribution. Both Otis and Maeves teacher Ms Sands noticed this and asked the headmaster about it. Maeve's brother Sean returns home after four months. Ola asks Otis out on a date. Jean misses Jakob and meets with him.
7th 7th Episode 7 Episode 7 Kate Herron Sophie Goodhart
Maeve doesn't want to go to the school ball, but Jackson convinces her to do so. Ola moves to Moordale and also goes to the ball with Otis. Maeve sabotages this by telling Ola that Otis has no sexual experience. When Ola asks Otis if he's dating Maeve, he says no. However, he suggests that he still finds Maeve better than Ola by comparing Maeve to a lioness and Ola to a domestic cat. This then leaves him. Jackson, drunk, tells Maeve that he paid Otis to get together with Maeve. Maeve is very shocked and dismissive. When Jackson is confronted by his mothers at home, he flees and finds accommodation with Maeve.

Eric suddenly decides to go to church with his family and feels welcome there; the pastor preaches that one must love and value oneself. So he goes to the school ball in drag and makes up with Otis. Sean sneaks to the ball and sells alcohol and other drugs . He is thrown out by Mr. Groff, who also argues with Adam in front of the whole school, when he tells him that he knows Adam did not write the essay. Despite Otis' worries, Jean sleeps with Jakob. He opens up to Jean, who initially rejects a relationship. Otis finds Jean's script about his sex phobia.

8th 8th Episode 8 Episode 8 Kate Herron Laurie Nunn
After the ball, Mr Groff finds Sean's drugs and mistakenly suspects Maeve and Otis are involved in a drug ring because of their sex clinic . Maeve takes the blame after her brother disappears again so Mr. Groff doesn't call the police. She then tells Jackson that she doesn't love him. This in turn blackmailed Mr. Groff and threatened him not to compete for the school swimming team if Maeve was expelled from school. However, Mr. Groff doesn't stick to the bargain. Eric wears makeup to school and apologizes from the swing band teacher. He still has to sit in detention: Together with Adam he should clean up the rehearsal room of the school band. First the two fight, but then they kiss and have sex. They then flirt with each other in class, but Adam is sent to a military school by his father because of his poor academic performance . Otis reads his mother's book and the two argue about their control and surveillance of his intimate life. However, they reconcile and want to improve their love lives: Jean tells Jakob that they can't see each other any further, and Otis apologizes to Maeve by stealing Adam's essay price for her and to Ola. Maeve wants to confess her feelings to Otis, but sees Otis and Ola kiss. Otis is aroused after the kiss and can masturbate for the first time .

criticism

Alex Abad-Santos writes on Vox that “ Sex Education surprises by [the series] going beyond the obvious jokes” and “is one of the few works that [goes beyond the normal] to address the insecurities and emotions of To give depth and valuation to teenagers who coexist with raging hormones and mythical sex drives ”.

In The Guardian , Lucy Mangan writes that “[this] Netflix show about the life of a sex therapist's son [...] could have been so easily embarrassing. Instead it is a wonderful, warm, tongue-in-cheek, funny creation ”.

Daniel Sander from Spiegel Magazin praises the series: "Otis ... is not real, but his problems are, that's why the series is so good." The author sees Otis as a typical representative of a whole generation of young people who have the feeling to be very well informed about sex, but ultimately to be deeply insecure in practice.

CNN's Brian Lowry says , “ Sex Education, on the other hand, feels a little too shocked - with lots of teenage groping and a well-endowed character dropping his pants at school - with no characters established get a lot of resonance in the first couple of its eight episodes ”.

Antonia Eichenauer writes on funky.de that Sex Education is “the best series ever” and that “the characters keep getting naked and let us look deeply into their emotional world, which is only possible because the actors are top notch” .
