Milla Meets Moses (original title Babyteeth ) is a 2019 Australian film directed by Shannon Murphy and starring Eliza Scanlen , Toby Wallace , Essie Davis and Ben Mendelsohn . The premiere took place on September 4, 2019 as part of the 76th Venice Film Festival , where the film was invited to the competition for the Golden Lion . The script is based on the play of the same name by Rita Kalnejais, which premiered in 2012 at the Belvoir Street Theater in Sydney .

action

The psychiatrist Henry and his wife Anna are the parents of Milla, who has cancer . At first, the rebellious teenage girl really only wants to shock her middle-class parents when she brings the drug addict Moses, whom she met at the train station, home to dinner. However, she falls in love with the clearly older school dropout.

As a psychiatrist, Milla's father also prescribes psychotropic drugs , including to his own wife. When Moses breaks into their house several times to steal medicines from Milla's father, Henry and his wife react surprisingly calmly. Finally, Henry even offers Moses to live with them and provide him with material while he looks after his daughter.

production

The film was produced by Whitefalk Films . Sherree Philips was responsible for the production design, Amelia Gebler for the costume design and Angus Robertson for the sound. The premiere took place at the 76th Venice Film Festival , where the film competed for the Golden Lion . In Germany, screenings at the Hamburg Film Festival are planned for the end of September / beginning of October 2019. The film was shown at the London Film Festival from October 6, 2019 .

For director Shannon Murphy, who had previously directed short films and television series, this was the feature film debut. The title is given by the milk tooth , which Milla still has in her mouth despite her age and which she loses at a central moment in the film as a sign of her growing up.

A theatrical release in Germany is planned for October 8, 2020.

reception

Alexandra Seibel found in the daily Kurier that Shannon Murphy told her sad drama in the cheerful tone of the tragicomedy. The first part of her story in particular offered a fresh, funny view of an Australian suburban environment, bizarre music teachers and pregnant neighbors with cigarettes in hand offered vivid insights into suburban sensitivities. “At some point the burden of cancer begins to weigh heavily, but it shouldn't be really bad either; Shannon Murphy prefers to stay mainstream compatible in the soft focus of emotions. "

Jenny Jecke from Moviepilot initially saw parallels to Fate is a Lousy Traitor and Three Steps to You , but wrote: “At the latest when we see the drug dealer Moses, it is certain that a change from the usual cancer romance is developing.” The film triumph with humor and nuances, even if the finale overshoots the mark.

Christoph Petersen described the film on film releases as a “touching coming-of-age story.” In view of the black-humored introduction of the family and the mildly ironic chapter title, the film initially looks like another clone of American Beauty . Murphy and her outstanding cast would go on a search for the tender and beautiful, especially in the dysfunctional. In this way, she succeeds in a coming-of-age drama that goes to the heart with possibly the best performance as a father who is ready to do anything for his terminally ill daughter.
