Soisy-sous-Montmorency is a municipality with 18,155 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the vicinity of the French capital Paris . Their inhabitants are called Soiséens or Soiséennes . Soisy-sous-Montmorency belongs to the canton of Montmorency .

geography

Soisy is located north-northeast of the center of Paris, at a distance of around 15 km as the crow flies. The city is nestled in the Montmorency Valley. Adjacent to the south is Lake Enghien. To the north are the hills and the forest of Montmorency.

Soisy neighboring municipalities are Andilly , Eaubonne , Enghien-les-Bains , Montmorency and Saint-Gratien .

history

A deed of donation from the nobleman of Montmorency (Seigneur de Montmorency) has come down to us from 1110 . In this document, the parish of Sosoi is transferred to the Abbey of Saint-Florent de Saumur. It is believed that the name derives from the Latin Sosiacus , which in turn can be traced back to the name Sosius. The place name therefore means possession of Sosius or place of Sosius . The place was touched by a Roman road that was part of the important Paris – Rouen connection . However, no further evidence of the Gallo-Roman past of the place was discovered.

The rolling hills in the area favored the cultivation of vines and fruit trees. The flat valley floor, on the other hand, was swampy, so that the population settled on the slopes of the hills.

In the Middle Ages, various fiefs arose in the community, including one that bore the place name. One of these feudal lords, Jean de Soisy , sold to Louis XIII. the area in Versailles on which the famous royal palace was later built. The last of the Lords of Soisy died in 1703 during the uprising of the Protestant rebels in Languedoc . The Saint-Denis monastery also owned land in Soisy. A place called Fosse-aux-moines (Monk's Moines) may be a reference to a monastic fish farm.

In the 18th century , the growth of the nearby city of Paris led to an upswing in local vegetable growing. Villas and castles were built by the wealthy. In 1846 the railway line from Paris to Pontoise was put into operation. In 1850 the municipality of Enghien-les-Bains was founded at the expense of the municipalities of Soisy and Pontoise. Soisy had to cede a large part of its municipality and the sulphurous healing springs at Lake Enghien. The famous Enghien racecourse was built in 1860. Most of it was and is on the territory of the municipality of Soisy.

In 1866 another rail link was put into operation: the line known as Refoulons ran on a steep route from Enghien to Montmorency, with stations in Soisy and Pointe-Raquet. In 1954 this steam-powered line was discontinued.

In the course of industrialization in the 19th century, the gypsum deposits in the local hills became significant. This led to the emergence of gypsum quarries and in the 20th century also to the emergence of a processing industry. Fruit and vegetable growing also experienced a further boom in the 19th century, at the expense of viticulture, the area under cultivation shrank from 54 hectares to 10 hectares between 1780 and 1901.

A law to promote housing, the Loi Loucheur , passed in 1921 by the Minister for Labor and Social Welfare, Louis Loucheur , led to a building boom and further population growth. The city population grew to 7,000 by 1954 and to 13,000 by 1964. The lower rents compared to the capital and the fast rail connection to Paris also promoted population growth. Ultimately, this was at the expense of traditional fruit, garden and vegetable growing on site. A typical Parisian suburban community emerged, with industrial establishments such as the Rincheval engineering factory and the Bernard foundry, as well as supermarkets and shopping centers.

In recent years, the old community center, with the traditional farms, has been renovated and revitalized.

At the beginning of May 2016, the city's mayor, Luc Strehaiano, was beaten up by a young scooter driver during a traffic dispute. The offender was sentenced to 10 months in prison on a fast-track trial.

Town twinning

Soisy is a twin town of Freiberg am Neckar , located in the greater Stuttgart area, and the northern Portuguese town of Fafe .

economy

Plaster of paris is exposed halfway up the hills of the Montmorency Forest. It is the most important gypsum deposit in Europe. In the 19th century, gypsum quarries and gypsum factories were built. The quarries were exploited until the end of the 20th century.

The Vieujot gypsum quarry and the Pavé-Saint-Paul plasterboard factory resumed operations in 1947. The gypsum quarry, which was also called Trou-du-Loup (Wolfsloch), is no longer exploited, but the factory still produces on site, which poses a number of environmental problems for the city.

The civil engineering company J. Fayolle et Fils , which has an annual turnover of around 150 million euros (as of 2005), has its headquarters in Soisy.

The shopping center Les deux cèdres is located in the municipality on the border with the municipality of Eaubonne. It includes a supermarket from the Auchan chain, a Bricorama hardware store , a garden market and a gallery. Another, somewhat smaller shopping center is located in the immediate vicinity.

traffic

Soisy-sous-Montmorency is close to the Champ de courses d'Enghien train station , on the Transilien suburban railway network . Travel time to Paris' Gare du Nord is 14 to 18 minutes.

From the train station you can take lines 10, 11, 12, 14 and 16 of the Valmy bus network, operated by TVO (Transports du Val-d'Oise) . The community also operates a minibus service, the Soisybus .

Soisy can be easily reached by car via the French A15 motorway, from which it is only 3 km away. The capital can be reached in 15 minutes by car via the Boulevard intercommunal du Parisis (sic), but only outside of peak hours.

Attractions

Gardens and parks

The municipality has two large parks:

The orangery of Val-Ombreux
  • In the parc du Val-Ombreux ("Park to the shady valley") there is an orangery from the 18th century . The park and the orangery are the only remnants of a castle from that time. After long abandonment, the castle was finally demolished in 1983. The orangery, which was also in a dilapidated state, was renovated in the early 1990s and has served the community as a conference and exhibition site ever since. There is also a large children's playground in the park.
  • The Parc René Bailly is located rue du Puits-Grenet .

In addition, the community maintains a number of other green and flower areas. 17 urban gardeners are busy maintaining the 23 hectares of green space and the 63 flower areas. In the spring and summer months, the city shines with flowers: Soisy advertises itself as ville fleurie ("blooming city") and has already won several awards at the Concours des villes et villages fleuris ("competition of blooming cities and villages").

building

The Saint-Germain church and the Parc du Val-Ombreux

The Saint-Germain church was built before 1624 and renovated in 1757 in the classicist style. As early as 1270, however, there is a mention of a chapel in the same place. The 16th century choir stalls were classified as a National Historic Monument in 1914. The church tower is the only remnant of a previous building from 1536. The cemetery that originally surrounded the church was abandoned in 1850. In 1968 the church was enlarged by a modern extension.

Sports facilities

Enghien-Soisy Racecourse

96% of the 44 hectares of the Champ de Courses d'Enghien-Soisy racecourse are in the municipality of Soisy. 4% are in the Eaubonne area . Nevertheless, the racecourse bears the name of the more famous neighboring and health resort of Enghien. Equestrian sports have been practiced here since 1860, but it wasn't until 1879 that it was officially opened as a hippodrome . In 1922 a permanent race track was built. The racetrack was closed during the two world wars.

The races are used by the leading French betting company Pari mutuel urbain for horse betting. Since 1997 it has been managed by the Société d'Encouragement du Cheval Français . The track specializes in trot and obstacle races. In 1986 it was renovated and equipped with a floodlight system. It has had its current official name, hippodrome d'Enghien-Soisy , since 1999.

Every year in April the Prix de l'Atlantique takes place there.
