history

The name Baillet probably comes from the Latin baliolum , possibly also derived from the Celtic bali (avenue of shadow).

The first traces of settlement date from the 5th century BC. The place was first mentioned in a letter from the Abbey of Saint-Denis in 832. The fiefdom , owned by the Counts d'O in the Middle Ages, developed around their feudal castle before it fell to the County of Guise . Territorial gains took place during the Huguenot Wars . The Duke of Choiseul -Praslin appropriated the village in the 19th century. The village was sacked during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71. The castle and the adjacent park were acquired and redesigned in 1937 by the Union fraternelle des métallurgistes de la région parisienne ( CGT ). Used as a holiday center until 1972, the property is sold to the CNPO (Caisse Nationale de Prévoyance des Ouvriers du Bâtiment) . Currently (2010) the recreation center is unused.
