Julius von Ehren was the son of a sailmaker whose ancestors had been Blankenese Elbe fishermen back to the 17th century. (The family moved from Tönning in 1673 ). He attended the community school in Altona. Thanks to the help of the support association, he was able to attend the class of Leopold von Kalckreuth at the Academy in Weimar from 1886 . Alfred Mohrbutter and Rudolf Höckner were among his classmates . In 1891 he went to the Royal Art Academy in Munich . From 1893 on he lived as a freelance painter in Hamburg. On study trips to the Lower Elbe he first painted simple pictures of village life together with Thomas Herbst . He was particularly interested in the lighting design of interiors, but also village streets, landscapes and portraits. His variations of duck paintings became known in Hamburg. In 1897 Julius von Ehren was one of the founders of the Hamburg Artists' Club from 1897 . In addition, from 1905 he belonged to the Association of Northwest German Artists and from 1907 to the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 . Membership in the German Association of Artists is also documented.

He went on study trips to Copenhagen and - together with the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle Alfred Lichtwark and artist colleagues to Paris . In 1899 he was awarded the gold medal at the German Art Exhibition in Dresden . In 1901 he became a member of the Berlin Secession . He married in 1914 and the couple had two children.

From 1910 onwards he took part in exhibitions less and less. He rarely succeeded in selling paintings. He was one of the young artists who, with their open-air painting in often strong colors, were initially very much rejected by the established Hamburg art scene. Lichtwark tried to support him. He once wrote: "... you don't persecute the young painters any more. But you let them starve ... Who cares about honors, who is happy when, by copying pictures that are far below his achievement, he has poor life ... " . For the main church St. Katharinen (Hamburg) he copied the panel paintings Crucifixion (Calvary of Tile Nigel, Hamburg around 1500) and Lamentation (Descent from the Cross, Dutch around 1520) in 1914/15 , since the originals of the Hamburger Kunsthalle (inv. 462 and 463) were handed over. They returned to St. Katharinen about 50 years after the Second World War. At times, von Ehren had to support his family as a ship painter and he refined art prints from a wholesaler with oil paints. In 1943 the city of Hamburg awarded him an honorary pension for his services . Julius von Ehren died in 1944.
