Auchan [ oʃɑ̃ ] is a French department store chain with around 880 hypermarkets , 860 supermarkets and 360 shopping centers in 15 countries.
history
Auchan was founded in 1961 when Gérard Mulliez and his 30 employees started work in a former factory on the Hauts Champs in Roubaix ( France ). In 1967 the company began to open its first branches.
Name and logo
Auchan is named after the Hauts Champs district in Roubaix, the location of Gérard Mulliez's first shop. Originally, the name was Ochan planned, but because of his Japanese sound that was O in an Au changed, so that the company continue to appear in the alphabetical listings front. While the company operates mainly under the Auchan name internationally , the markets in Spain are called Al Campo (translated into French: au champ 'on the field') and in Portugal Jumbo . A red bird has appeared above the logo since 1983. It represents a robin , which is considered a popular figure in France.
Takeover of Real's Central and Eastern European business
On November 30, 2012, Auchan announced the takeover of the Real stores in Central and Eastern Europe. The agreement entered into force in 2013 following approval by the competition authorities. Auchan took over the operating business and real estate in Poland , Romania , Russia and Ukraine from the Metro Group for 1.1 billion euros. Before the takeover, Auchan operated 98 supermarkets with 65,000 employees in the four countries. A total of 91 supermarkets and 13 shopping centers in Russia and Romania changed hands.
Purchasing alliance with the Metro Group
In autumn 2014, Auchan agreed on an international cooperation with the German Metro Group in the form of coordinated negotiations with major suppliers and joint procurement of non-food items, particularly in the area of own-label retailers.
