Gérard Paul Louis Mulliez (born May 13, 1931 in Roubaix ) is a French entrepreneur and manager .

Life

The son of the entrepreneur Gérard Mulliez (1906-1989) and Françoise Robertine Marie Cavrois (1911-2008) first attended the Notre-Dame-des-Dunes school in Dunkirk and then the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires high school in Roubaix. This was followed by studies at Mayfield College in England and at the Roubaix Technical Institute. In 1954 he joined the family business as a foreman in a textile dyeing factory, in 1956 he became production manager and in 1958 sales director of the Phildar textile group .

In the late 1950s, Mulliez attended seminars from retail pioneer Bernardo Trujillo in the United States . Based on his ideas and the entrepreneurial concept of Marcel Fournier , founder of the retail company Carrefour , he opened his first shop in 1961 under the name Auchan in a former factory in the Hauts Champs (Roubaix) district. The profits did not materialize in the founding years; It was only through the advice of Édouard Leclerc , the founder of the retail chain E.Leclerc , that Mulliez recognized the concept of a low- price policy , which he soon established in his company and which helped him achieve economic success.

After opening another store in Roncq in 1967, Mulliez received further capital through the Association Familiale Mulliez holding company founded by Francis Mulliez in 1955 , with which the company expanded on a national level in the following years. In 1981, Alcampo, the first foreign branch , was founded in Spain . Further branches followed: 1989 in Italy, 1996 in Luxembourg and Poland, 1998 in Hungary, 2002 in Russia, 2006 in Romania and 2008 in Ukraine.

Mulliez was chairman (président du conseil d'administration) until 1996 and CEO (président du conseil de surveillance) of the wholesale and department store chain Auchan until 2006 . He resigned from the Supervisory Board on June 6, 2006, but continued to work in an advisory capacity for the company. His cousin Damien's son, Vianney Mulliez , succeeded him at the helm.

Gérard Mulliez has been married to Bernadette, nee Mathias, since 1955. The couple has three children and lives in Croix near Lille .
