Joaquim Gonçalves

Joaquim Gonçalves (born May 17, 1936 in Revelhe , † December 31, 2013 in Póvoa de Varzim ) was Bishop of Vila Real .

Life

Joaquim Gonçalves, the third of eight children, studied humanities, philosophy and theology in the seminaries of the Archdiocese of Braga from 1948 to 1960 . He was ordained a priest on July 10, 1960 in the chapel of the seminary in Braga.

Pope John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Ursona and auxiliary bishop in Braga on August 3, 1981 . The Archbishop of Braga , Eurico Dias Nogueira , donated him episcopal ordination on October 18, 1981 in the Basilica of Sameiro, Braga ; Co- consecrators were Júlio Tavares Rebimbas , Archbishop ad personam of Viana do Castelo , and António de Castro Xavier Monteiro , Archbishop ad personam of Lamego .

On May 19, 1987, he was appointed coadjutor bishop of Vila Real by John Paul II . After António Cardoso Cunha's retirement , he succeeded him as Bishop on January 19, 1991. On May 17, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.

In the Portuguese Bishops' Conference he was a member of the Episcopal Commission for Migration and Tourism, the Episcopal Commission for the Liturgy and President of the Episcopal Commission for Missions.
