Barroca is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Fundão . It has 496 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

geography

The place is 29 km west of the district town Fundão, and about 60 km northwest of the district capital Castelo Branco .

history

At the time of the Arab occupation, the place was known as Borca (English: stony, undeveloped land). It formed with Bodelhão (renamed Aldeia de São Francisco de Assis in 1928 ) the municipality of Barroca-Bodelhão . In 1895 Bodelhão was assigned to the municipality of Ourondo , and Barroca remained as an independent municipality, which at the same time was annexed to the place Alqueidão, which previously belonged to Dornelas do Zêzere .

Culture and sights

The place belongs to the route of the traditional slate villages of the region, the Aldeias do Xisto . In the listed Edifício Senhorial da Família Fabião (dt .: stately building of the Fabião family), the manor house from the 18th century, also simply called Casa Grande (dt .: large house) , is also the publicly accessible headquarters of the slate village project, with a Shop and public information and exhibition rooms.

A number of religious buildings in the community are listed buildings, in addition to various chapels, in particular the parish church Igreja Paroquial de Barroca (also Igreja de São Sebastião ) from the 19th century.
