Vila Cova de Alva is a small town ( Vila ) and former municipality in Portugal . It is one of the protected slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto .

The place is on the Rio Alva and in the middle of the Serra do Açor , a promontory to the Serra da Estrela . It is 19 km northeast of the county town of Arganil, and about 55 km east of the district capital Coimbra .

history

The place received its first city rights between 1304 and 1318, which were renewed and expanded in 1513 by King D. Manuel I. Still under the name Vila Cova de Subavô , it was an independent circle.

In the course of the administrative reforms after the liberal Miguelistenkrieg in 1834, the district was dissolved in 1836 and has been a municipality of the Arganil district ever since.

With the territorial reform in 2013, the municipality of Vila Cova de Alva was dissolved and merged with Anceriz .

Vila Cova de Alva was the seat of a community of the same name ( Freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Arganil in the Coimbra district . 516 inhabitants lived in the municipality on an area of ​​12.72 km² (as of June 30, 2011).

Culture, sports and sights

As one of the typical regional slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto , Vila Cova de Alva is known for its river bath and its historic village center. In addition to the stake as a symbol of city rights in the center of the village, there are various sacred buildings in the community . There are also mansions in the community, and the Mannerist - Baroque convent Convento de Santo António (with the church Igreja de Santo António ) , built from 1713 onwards .
