Fajão is a locality and former municipality in Portugal . It is one of the slate villages on the route of the Aldeias do Xisto .
geography
The place lies between the Serra da Lousã and the Serra da Estrela , in the foothills of the Iberian Divide Mountains . It is about 20 km north of the district town of Pampilhosa da Serra, and about 60 km east of the district capital Coimbra .
history
The place received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time in 1233. Until the administrative reforms in 1855, it was the seat of its own district, and since then has belonged to Pampilhosa da Serra.
Culture and sights
The place is known for its slate architecture and in 2001 it was included in the newly created program of historic slate villages, the Aldeias do Xisto .
The parish church (Portuguese: Igreja Paroquial de Fajão ) is called Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (English: Church of Our Lady of the Assumption). Erected in 1788, it is now a listed building.
economy
In the already structurally weak region, the municipality traditionally had further disadvantages due to its remoteness and the unsuitable soil for agriculture.
Today, small industry and trade, alongside social institutions, are located in the community. Forestry and wood processing are important here. Electricity is produced in dams and wind farms in the municipality. Tourism, especially in rural tourism and gastronomy, has gained in importance since the place has belonged to the nationally marketed slate villages of the Aldeias do Xisto .
administration
Fajão was an independent community ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Pampilhosa da Serra .
On June 30, 2011, the community had 239 inhabitants on an area of 65.8 km².
