Machio is a former municipality in Portugal . It is also the common name for the two main places of the former municipality, Machio de Cima ("upper Machio") and Machio de Baixo ("lower Machio").

history

Machio was officially mentioned for the first time in a document from 1241. It was probably just a collection of a few houses until more Jews who had been forced to convert to Christianity, so-called Cristãos novos , settled here in the 15th and 16th centuries . In 1835 the community became independent for the first time as São Miguel do Machio with the towns of Machio de Baixo, Machio de Cima and Vale Pereiras. In 1896, the community was expanded to include the places Maria Gomes, Portalegre and Travessa, through outsourcing from the community of Alvares .

In 1868 the community had 270 inhabitants, in 1930 there were 776 inhabitants. Since the 1960s in particular, the population development in Machio was then characterized by strong emigration. In 2011 the community still had 123 inhabitants. In the course of the territorial reform in 2013, Machio and Portela do Fojo were reunited to form a common municipality.
