Portela do Fojo is a former municipality in Portugal .

history

The municipality was founded in 1795 when it was separated from the municipality of Alvares . The current place was first mentioned in 1281, in the town charter ( Foral ) for Alvares. Finds, however, point to the time before the Bronze Age , when people already lived and farmed here.

With the construction of the Cabril dam in 1954, the municipality lost part of its area and the village of Vilar da Amoreira was submerged in the water.

In 2013 Portela do Fojo was merged with Machio to form a new communal community.

Culture and sights

The simple parish church Igreja Paroquial de Portela do Fojo (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Paz ) from the 18th century is a listed building.

The nearby reservoir is ideal for swimming and water sports.

Portela do Fojo was an independent municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Pampilhosa da Serra . On June 30, 2011 the community had 381 inhabitants on an area of ​​37.8 km².

Amoreira Cimeira and Amoreira Fundeira now form an agglomeration and are usually referred to as a place called Amoreira. It forms the actual capital of the former municipality of Portela do Fojo. The other main towns are Padrões, Folgares, Ribeiro do Soutelinho and Trinhão.
