Rabaçal is a locality and former municipality in Portugal . The place is known for its cheese and historical sites.

history

In the ruins of the Germanelo castle complex

Roman roads and a late Roman villa from the 4th century AD are traces of the Roman settlement in today's municipality.

Germanelo Castle was built in 1142 as part of the Reconquista and was the seat of a district. With the conquest of Santarém in 1147, the castle lost its strategic importance again. The settlement efforts were discontinued and the district was dissolved. In the 14th century the castle was completely abandoned and left to decay.

In the early 1940s, the historian Salvador Dias Arnaut (1913–1995) from Penela acquired the castle ruins and partially rebuilt them using original stones found on site, according to original plans, such as the north wall and gates. Since 2000 , the municipality, district and monument protection agencies have been trying to preserve the castle, which is still privately owned. Together with the cheese and the excavations that have been carried out in batches at the Villa Romana since 1984 , the castle has become an essential figurehead of today's community.

Cheese and Cheese Market

The place is known for its origin-protected cheese, the Queijo Rabaçal . It is made from sheep and goat milk and gets its aroma from the locally growing herbs Erva de Santa Maria , a type of goosefoot . It is available both fresh and as hard cheese.

The community has been holding an annual spring cheese market at Villa Romana since 2010. The Mercado do Queijo do Rabaçal is both a fair, where products are displayed and traded, and a festival, where folklore , folk dancing and local gastronomy are offered, and where performances commemorate the Roman legacy of the place.
