Manuel Lopes de Almeida

Manuel Lopes de Almeida (born August 16, 1900 in Benavente , Santarém district ; † December 15, 1980 ) was a Portuguese university professor , historian and politician who was Minister of National Education from 1961 to 1962.

Life

After attending school, Almeida first began studying medicine at the University of Coimbra , but some time later switched to the Faculty of Humanities there. There he completed a degree in history and geography , which he graduated with a licentiate in 1930. Between 1934 and 1936 he was head of the cabinet of the Minister for Public Education Eusébio Tamagnini . In 1938 he was elected a member of the National Assembly ( Assembleia Nacional ) for the first time and was a member of this until his resignation on July 21, 1940. During his membership in parliament he acted as secretary to the plenary. He resigned on July 21, 1940 after being appointed acting director general for higher education and fine arts. Shortly thereafter, on August 28, 1940, he was appointed Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of National Education (Subsecretário de Estado da Educação Nacional) and held this post until September 6, 1941.

In the meantime, Almeida had acquired a doctorate in history at the University of Coimbra in 1940 and then took over a professorship in history at this university in 1941. In 1949 he was again a member of the Assembleia Nacional and represented in this now for twenty years until 1969 the constituency of Santarém . During his parliamentary membership he was a member of various committees, namely in from 1949 to 1961 for national education, folk culture, spiritual and moral interests and from 1953 to 1961 and again from 1965 to 1969 for legislation and writing.

On May 4, 1961, Almeida was appointed Minister of National Education (Ministro da Educação Nacional) by Prime Minister António de Oliveira Salazar and held this office until December 4, 1962.

honors and awards

Almeida has received several awards and received, among other things, on March 17, 1938 the dignity of the Military Order of Christ (Ordem Militar de Cristo) , on April 30, the dignity of Grand Officer of this order and on July 19, 1961 the Grand Cross of the Order of the Infante Cathedral Henrique (Ordem do Infante D. Henrique) , on August 19, 1970 the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Jacob of the Sword (Ordem de Sant'Iago da Espada) .
