List of power plants in Sierra Leone
This is a list of Sierra Leone's current and planned power plants .
The public energy supply company is the National Power Authority of the Ministry of Energy , which since 2011 has been divided into the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company (EGTC) (power generation and distribution) and the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) ( power supply and regulation) on the basis of the National Electricity Act should be (as of August 2017).
Current supply
Sierra Leones is one of the few independent states that has to do almost entirely without public energy generation . The majority of the population has no connection to an electricity grid. The capital Freetown can only provide about four hours of electricity a day (as of July 2017). There are also frequent power outages during supply times . The 2015 census found that only about 6,450 households nationwide (out of 1.265 million) have access to electricity. This corresponds to a share of 0.5 percent. Other sources say that in rural areas only one percent of the population is connected to the electricity grid; in the cities approx. 12%. All residents should have access to electricity by 2025.
Only since 2013 there is the Bumbuna - hydroelectric power plant , a first public power plant . The power supply is largely based on individual diesel generators at household level.
