List of power plants in Mauritania

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The power plants in Mauritania are shown both on a map and in tables (with key figures). The list is not complete.

Installed capacity and annual production

In 2016, Mauritania was in 144th place in the world with 558  MW of installed capacity and 147th place in the world for annual generation with 1.139 billion  kWh . The degree of electrification was 41.7% in 2016 (81% in cities and 2.3% in rural areas). In 2016, Mauritania was self-sufficient in terms of electricity generation; it neither imported nor exported electricity.

The state electricity supplier Société mauritanienne d'électricité (SOMELEC) operates 60 systems with an installed capacity of 486 MW (as of December 2019). It is planned to build three 225 kV lines to connect the population centers on the coast and in the south of the country as well as some of the current island networks in the interior. Another 225 kV line is to connect Nouakchott with Senegal .

It is intended to export electricity to both Mali and Senegal.

Hydropower plants

The only permanent water-bearing river in Mauritania is Senegal , which forms the border with the neighboring country Senegal to the south . Currently (as of June 2020) there are no hydropower plants along the border, so Mauritania does not have its own hydropower plants. However, Mauritania is contractually entitled to part of the electricity generated by three hydropower plants in neighboring Mali .
