List of power plants in Namibia
This is a list of the current and planned power plants in Namibia .
The energy of Namibia made solely by the state electric utility Namibia Power Corporation and its regional subsidiaries. The power supply in rural areas is still largely ensured by individually operated generators and solar energy .
A large part of the required electrical energy is obtained on the basis of an agreement mainly from Zimbabwe (150 MW) and from the South African electricity supplier Eskom as well as from Zambia . Numerous contracts expire by 2016, so that more power plants are to be expanded and newly built in their own country . Currently (as of December 2015) a maximum of 511 MW can be produced by own power plants. Between 1990 and 2009 Namibia imported an average of 48 percent of its electricity requirements, between 2010 and 2017 it was 38 percent.
The annual consumption in Namibia was 611 MW in 2015 , of which up to 80 percent can now be covered by our own power plants at peak times. The demand is to rise to 879 MW by 2020. The power supply is considered safe due to sufficient imports.
Current situation
All of southern Africa will face energy shortages for the next 15 years. The construction of the Grand Inga power plant in the Democratic Republic of the Congo could solve some of the bottleneck. The Namibian electricity supplier Nampower has already warned of bottlenecks and suggested a reduction in electricity consumption of at least 10%. The entire SADC is projected to have a financial requirement of 170 billion US dollars to build new power plants and electricity grids.
