The Elephant Mountain south of Otavi (2014)

Otavi (the name comes from the name of a nearby spring; the word itself comes from the Ovambo : " tava ", which describes the movements of a newborn at birth ) is a town in the constituency of the same name in the Otjozondjupa region in Namibia . In 2011 the city had a population of around 5200 inhabitants.

The city lies together with Grootfontein and Tsumeb in the Otavi triangle (also known as the “Maisdreieck”), an area that is used intensively for agriculture and has high rainfall. The city is a traffic junction in Namibia: the national road B1 , the national road B8 (part of the Trans-Caprivi-Highway ) and the main road C39 meet here. The Khorab memorial is located three kilometers outside of Otavi, which was erected to commemorate the surrender of the German protection force of South West Africa on July 9, 1915.

About 7 km south of Otavi is the Elephant Mountain at 1624 meters above sea level.

In Otavi, the "German Private School Otavi" is the smallest German-speaking school in Namibia. 18 schoolchildren learn here.

Local politics

In the local elections in 2010 the following official final result was determined.

Political party be right Share of votes Seats
SWAPO 957 88.7% 6th
DTA 079 07.3% 1
APP 035 03.2% 0
RDP 026th 02.4% 0
All in all 1079 100% 7th

In 2004 the status of Otavi was changed from that of a town to that of a village after it had been considered since 1998 due to the tight financial situation. In 2011, however, Otavi was proclaimed a city again.

Otavi Mining and Railway Company

Otavi gave its name to the Otavi Mining and Railway Company based in Berlin , founded for the sole purpose of building a railway to Tsumeb and exploiting the copper deposits there. It became part of the Greek S&B group and is responsible for the perlite business in this group . Other mines being mined in the region include the Kombat Mine east of Otavi, the Tsumeb West Mine and the fluorspar mine Okorusu operated by Solvay SA
