The Otavi Mountains (also known as the Otavi Mountains ) lie in northwestern Namibia , northeast of the city of Otavi and substantially fill the so-called " Otavi Triangle " (also called "corn triangle" called), a 2,500 km² area between the three cities Otavi, Tsumeb and Grootfontein .
The rough mountain landscape consists mainly of weathered carbonate rocks . The highest peak is the Gross-Otavi peak at 2069 m . Significant landscape features are the Drachenhauchloch and Ghaubhöhle , the latter with a length of approx. 2.7 kilometers, the third longest cave in Namibia and the Hoba meteorite , the largest meteorite on earth. The Elefantenberg gained historical fame .
The mountain slopes and valleys are predominantly overgrown with thorn bushes and isolated euphorbias (milkweed), the latter an indication that the mean annual temperature is well above 30 ° Celsius. At 520 mm, the Otava Mountains have one of the highest amounts of precipitation - and thus also one of the highest groundwater stocks in Namibia. Not least because of this, the soil is considered to be one of the richest in Namibia.
economy
Like the nearby mine in Tsumeb and Grootfontein, the Otavi Mountains are home to a considerable wealth of minerals . Among other things, impressive minerals are found at the mining locations of Uchab (formerly Guchab), Abenab and Berg Aukas , in particular Descloizit , Willemite , Dioptas and the world's largest vanadinite crystals.
Namibian wine is grown on two wineries on a few hectares in the mountains .
