history
The town was built by Rössing Uranium Limited in 1972 for its employees in the Rössing mine , which is only 15 km away, and is a pure mining town . In 1992, Arandis was given to the Namibian state as a "gift" by the Rössing Group on the occasion of the country's independence two years earlier.
Arandis has had city status since 1994/1995.
The name "Arandis" goes back to the "Arandis station" of the Otavibahn , which was 60 km away from Swakopmund. In the mid-1920s a tin deposit was discovered in the marble about 35 km north of this train station, which was initially called "Annaberg" or, after its owner W. Stiepelmann, "Stiepelmann-Grube", but later called "Arandis Tin Mine". The deposit was worked by Paul Ramdohr , who from here u. a. described the minerals Arandisit and Nordenskiöldin . The city of Arandis lives on indirectly in the mineral name "Arandisit".
economy
Most of the city's working population is employed by Rössing. To this day, the city is economically completely dependent on the Rössing Group, which is the livelihood for almost every household in the city. Up until a few years ago there were no shopping facilities or gas stations in Arandis , so that Swakopmund, located on the coast, benefited indirectly and continuously from Arandis, as the residents of the place spent an estimated 90% of their freely disposable income in Swakopmund.
When the world market prices for uranium oxide fell drastically shortly after the turn of the millennium , the mine was initially announced to be closed for 2007. Because the uranium oxide price rose disproportionately again in the following years, the planned closure was discarded. Instead, the group invested a further US $ 112 million in order to be able to extract uranium oxide at Arandis at least until 2021.
By 2016 Arandis wants to become a self-sufficient city and thus operate more independently of Rössing. Until then, the economy should be diversified with the aim of creating jobs in industry (70%), education (20%) and tourism (5%).
