only reservoir in the country |
The Bumbuna Dam is the largest dam in Sierra Leone . He jams the Seli . The dam is located a few kilometers from Bumbuna in the Tonkolili district . The dam houses the first and only hydroelectric power plant in the country and is the only public, supra-regional power plant in the country. The maximum output power is 50 megawatts.
history
As early as 1971, the planning for the construction of the dam and a hydropower plant started to ensure the power supply in the country. To date (as of March 2017), Sierra Leone, including the capital Freetown, has no permanent public power supply. Construction began in 1975, which was interrupted several times due to the civil war and was finally interrupted in May 1997. At this point the dam was about 85 percent complete. Construction resumed in 2005 and was completed in 2009.
Construction and construction
The construction costs of around 327 million US dollars were largely borne by the African Development Bank .
The CFR dam has a maximum height of 87 meters, a length of 440 meters and a capacity of 2,500,000 cubic meters. The volume of the reservoir should be between 410,000,000 m³ and 480,000,000 m³.
power plant
There are (as of March 2017) two Francis turbines with a capacity of 25 MW each installed. Due to persistent problems (as of 2013) a maximum of 10 MW to 25 MW are produced.
In a second phase, the power plant is to be expanded by a capacity of 143 MW by 2021.
