Port Loko is a city in Sierra Leone . It has been the capital of the newly created North West Province and capital of the Port Loko district since 2017 . It is in the Chiefdom Maforki .

The place is about 60 kilometers northeast of Freetown on Bankasoka ( Port Loko Creek ).

Abubakarr Kamara of the All People's Congress has been the mayor since mid-2019 .

Port Loko is located in the Temne settlement area . While the town only had 5,809 residents in 1963, there were 10,500 in 1974 and 15,248 in 1985. The result of the 2004 census was a population of 21,961.

Infrastructure and economy

The city has an airport and is located on the Magampa- Pepel railway line , which is only used for the transport of goods. Nearby is bauxite mined. The main agricultural product is rice.
