Porsche diesel engine construction

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As Porsche-Diesel Motorenbau GmbH , the automobile manufacturer Porsche manufactured tractors with diesel engines in Manzell on Lake Constance during the 1950s and early 1960s . The story began in 1938 with the idea of the people's tractor, of which various prototypes were built in Stuttgart .

history

In order to motorize agriculture, in 1937, at the suggestion of Adolf Hitler, the German Labor Front commissioned Ferdinand Porsche to develop a small agricultural tractor that was to motorize agriculture as a people's tractor , parallel to the Volkswagen , which was to enable mass motorization of the population. The following properties were particularly important here: inexpensive to purchase and maintain, suitable for large-scale production, sufficient power for all work that occurs on farms, robust and easy to use. With an air-cooled two-cylinder engine with an output of 8 kW (11 hp), this was intended for small and medium-sized farms and was to be mass-produced in a new tractor factory near Waldbröl . Due to the Second World War , however, only test vehicles were manufactured.

The Porsche tractor emerged from the further development of the people's tractor. Production began in 1950, initially in cooperation with the Uhingen company Allgaier Werke GmbH. From 1956 in cooperation with the Mannesmann Group with an assembly plant in Friedrichshafen . In 1962, MAN's tractor division was merged with that of Porsche. In 1963 Porsche sold the tractor division to Renault . A total of around 120,000 Porsche tractors were built.

Production of the tractors, 16,000 of which were sold in 1961, ended on July 15, 1963. In July 1963, Mercedes-Benz Motorenbau GmbH, a subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG , took over the facilities and workforce of Porsche-Diesel-Motorenbau GmbH. In August, the production of the MB 833, 837 and 838 large engine series was relocated from Untertürkheim to Friedrichshafen-Manzell.

Models

The Porsche diesel tractors were available with engines of various types, from single-cylinder to four-cylinder engines. The type of engine installed can be identified from the tractor designation.
