David Trim (2012)

David JB Trim (born October 13, 1969 in Bombay , India ) is a British historian who specializes in culturalist military history in Europe, particularly the early modern period , and the history of religion . He was a university lecturer and is currently the archivist for the World Headquarters of Seventh-day Adventists in the United States.

Life

David Trim was born in Bombay to Adventist missionaries and spent most of his childhood and school years in Australia. He studied in England at Newbold College (privately owned by the Adventist Church) and wrote his dissertation at King's College London , where he received his Ph.D. got in history. His dissertation dealt with the interventions of the English military in continental wars in the 16th and 17th centuries ( Fighting "Jacob's Wars". The Employment of English and Welsh Mercenaries in the European Wars of Religion: France and the Netherlands 1562–1610 ).

From 1999 to 2007 Trim taught history, hermeneutics and missiology at Newbold College, England, and was a visiting fellow at various Anglo-American universities and institutions such as the University of Reading , the University of California, Berkeley , the Huntington Library and the Folger Shakespeare Library . In 2008 and 2009 Trim was visiting professor of history ( Walter Utt Chair ) at Pacific Union College in Napa Valley, California. Since then, David Trim has headed the Archives and Statistics Department at the Seventh-day Adventist World Headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.

David Trim has been a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society since 2003 . He is co-editor of the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research and, along with Frank Tallett, is founder and co-editor of the book series Warfare, Society and Culture at Pickering & Chatto.

Trim reports on his research motivation that he has always considered the influence of religion on wars to be important and underestimated in contemporary Western science; He does not consider the common explanation that religious patterns of legitimation only served as a disguising surface for power-political or economic interests to be sufficient. That is why Trim was particularly concerned with the European Calvinists around 1600, who, in his opinion, were the reason for many wars of the time, because they did not submit to the ruling order. Trim concludes from these results the threat posed by Islamist terrorism today and calls for the jihadists not to be declared fanatical or insane, but rather to understand their motivations and thereby take them seriously.

He is married to an American from California.

Works (selection)

David Trim has neither published his dissertation nor other monographs, but published the results of his research in nine (co-) edited anthologies and over forty articles (as of the end of 2012). Trim also writes for Adventist magazines.
