Douglas is a city in Converse County in Wyoming , United States . There are 5288 people living in Douglas. It is the administrative seat of Converse County. Douglas is located on the North Platte River and is named after former US Senator Stephen Arnold Douglas .

history

The city was founded in 1886 when the Wyoming Central Railway , later the Chicago and North Western Railway, built a stop here. Since the construction of Fort Fetterman about 20 kilometers away in 1867, there has been a small settlement called Tent City here . Due to the railway connection, the small settlement grew into a town that in 1910 had around 2240 inhabitants. In 1996, Douglas was in the book The 100 Best Small Towns in America by Norm Crampton was added in place of the 72nd In 1958, Douglas hit the headlines across the country when wanted serial killer Charles Starkweather was arrested here after fleeing from neighboring Nebraska.

The city is at an altitude of about 1474 meters, the area over which the city extends is 13.6 km². 13.2 km² of this is land and 0.4 km² is water, which is 2.67% of the total area.

Transport links

The Interstate 25 runs west of the city and connects with the Douglas about 70 kilometers west located Casper and the 200km southern Cheyenne . The Union Pacific Railroad runs through the city on which only goods, especially coal, have been transported since the 1950s. Converse County Airport is just north of the city .

Demographics

According to a 2000 survey, 5288 people live in 2118 households and 1423 families. The population density is 403.6 / km². 94.1% of the population is white, 6.64% are Hispanics and Latinos , 0.78% are Native Americans, and 0.07% are African American.

The Wyoming State Fair , the Wyoming State's agricultural fair , takes place every summer in Douglas and is known for its rodeo and animal competitions.

The Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum has a collection of Native American and pioneer relics.

The former station building of the Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places . In the building which now houses the Chamber of Commerce (Chamber of Commerce) by Douglas and the Douglas Railroad Interpretive Center with an exhibition on the history of the railway in the city. On the former station square there are seven historic railway wagons and a steam locomotive with tender that can be viewed.

In the wider area, the Laramie Mountains extend with the highest peak of the mountain range, the Laramie Peak, which is part of the Medicine Bow National Forest . The Thunder Basin National Grassland and the Ayres Natural Bridge Park , a reserve with a natural bridge over LaPrele Creek , are also nearby.

Glendo State Park is about 25 kilometers southeast of the city . There the North Platte River is dammed from the Glendo Dam to the Glendo Reservoir . The park offers many opportunities for recreational activities, especially for water sports enthusiasts and anglers.
