The dam Glendo ( English Glendo Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric power plant in Platte County , State of Wyoming , USA . It dams the North Platte River to a reservoir ( English Glendo Reservoir ). The dam is located approximately 7 km (4.5 miles ) southeast of the town of Glendo . The dam and reservoir are in Glendo State Park . Approximately 40 km (25 miles) downstream is the Guernsey Dam . The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.
history
Preliminary investigations into the construction of a dam at Glendo began in 1944. The different interests of the states of Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming in relation to water rights and the use of water delayed the start of construction until 1954. Construction of the dam began in December 1954. It was completed in the fall of 1957. The impoundment began in October 1957. The construction of the associated hydropower plant was completed in 1958.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is an earth embankment dam with a height of 58 m (190 ft ) above the foundation level . The dam crest is 1425 m (4675 ft) above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 639 m (2096 ft). The width of the dam is 10.6 m (35 ft) at the crown.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . The flood discharge is on the right side of the dam. A maximum of 368 m³ / s (13,000 cft / s) can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 292 m³ / s (10,335 cft / s) via the flood discharge.
Reservoir
With a storage target of 1418 m (4653 ft), the reservoir extends over an area of around 72.78 km² (17,986 acres ) and holds 941 million m³ (763,039 acre-feet ) of water. The reservoir extends over a length of around 46 km (28.7 miles); its maximum width is 1.6 km (1 mile).
power plant
The power station is approximately 1.2 km (4000 ft) from the dam on the right side of the river. Its installed capacity is 38 MW . The installed capacity was originally 24 MW. From 1980 to 1984 an increase in performance was carried out; the turbines and generator windings were replaced. The average annual production is around 55.6 million kWh . The power plant's two Francis turbines each have a maximum output of 19 MW. The drop height is 30.5 m (100 ft).
