The dam Cortes ( English Korte Dam ) is a dam with hydroelectric plant in Carbon County , State of Wyoming , USA . It dams the North Platte River to a small reservoir ( English Kortes Reservoir ). The dam is located approximately 3 km (2  miles ) downstream from the Seminoe Dam .

Construction of the dam began in May 1946. It was completed in November 1951. Electricity was first generated in June 1950. The dam is owned by the United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) and is also operated by the USBR.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 74 m (244  ft ) above the foundation level . The length of the top of the wall is 134 m (440 ft). The width of the dam is 59 m (193 ft) at the base and 7.3 m (24 ft) at the top. The volume of the structure is 112,390 m³ (147,000  cubic yards ).

Reservoir

At the normal reservoir target of 1870 to 1872 m (6138 to 6142 ft) above sea level , the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.336 km² (83  acres ) and holds 5.88 million m³ (4765 acre-feet ) of water.

power plant

The power plant is located at the foot of the dam. The installed capacity is 36  MW . The average annual production is 160 million  kWh . The 3 Francis turbines of the power plant each have a maximum output of 12 MW. The drop height is 63 m (207 ft).

Due to the small reservoir, the Kortes power plant is operated in close cooperation with the Seminoe power plant. Both power plants are operated from the Casper Control Center in Casper .
