The models of the Porsche 911 and 912 , which have been manufactured since 1965 and which are equipped with a special roof construction - with a removable roof center section and permanently installed safety bar, or since 1996 a large panoramic glass roof - are referred to as the Porsche Targa . The term Targa originated from Targa Florio , a famous long-distance race from 1906 to 1977 , in which the Zuffenhäuser were able to achieve several decisive victories in the course of their motorsport career. The Targa in Italian means "shield" was not known to those responsible at the time it was named. The name Targa is one of the Dr. Ing.hc F. Porsche AG for car models a trademark protected term.

Parallel to the 911 Targa offered Porsche 1969-1976 with in cooperation with Volkswagen developed and marketed Porsche 914 yet another model with Targa roof on. In contrast to the 911 and 912, however, the 914 was only available with a Targa roof. From 1976 onwards, Porsche drivers had access to the Porsche 911 and 912 Targa as well as the Porsche 924 , 944 and 968 models with a Targa roof. In contrast to the 911 and 912, however, these four-cylinder transaxle vehicles only allowed a slightly larger than sliding roof-sized section of the roof to be removed, leaving a circumferential roof frame around ten centimeters wide. From 2003 to 2006, Porsche again offered a model with a Targa roof, the Carrera GT .

Since May 10, 2014, the 991 Targa 4 and 4S, a Porsche Targa based on the old model with a soft top, fixed bracket and large one-piece rear window, has been available again. In contrast to the original Targa, the roof is now operated with a complex hydropneumatic mechanism.

The history of the Porsche Targa

The first Porsche Targa roof was in September 1965 at the IAA as a 911 Porsche presents Targa. In contrast to the completely open Porsche 911 Cabriolet , which was only introduced in the 1980s, there was a rollover protection system (the so-called Targa bar ), whereby the resulting “safety convertible ” complied with the stricter approval guidelines of the US export market, which is important for Porsche . The front roof part (foldable aluminum die-cast frame with synthetic leather cover ) and the rear mini fabric hood with plastic pane could be removed separately and stowed in the trunk. From the 1969 model year, there was a fixed protective window made of heatable safety glass in the rear. By 1973, a total of 23,358 911 Targa and 2,562 Porsche 912 Targa were built on the basis of the "Urelfers" , which were sold at base prices between 22,380 DM (911 Targa, 1967) and 34,700 DM (911 S Targa, 1973). In January 2016, Deutsche Post issued a stamp with a face value of 70 cents as part of the "Classic German Cars" series . with a picture of a 1967 Porsche 911 Targa.

The Porsche Targa of the G model

With the change to the Porsche 911 G model , which was available from 1973, Porsche planned to replace the removable folding roof with a fixed aluminum roof, which, however, did not meet with much approval from Targa customers. Therefore, from April 1974, the well-known folding roof, which had only been available for the G-model Targa since its introduction in August 1973 at an extra charge, became standard equipment again. From 1975 the safety bar on the Carrera Targa was black instead of silver, a change that was carried over to all 911 Targa from model year 1979. From spring 1987 the top model of the 911, the 911 Turbo, was also available as a Targa and, like the 911 Turbo Coupé with a 4-speed gearbox, remained available until April 1988. 193 copies are sold at basic prices from DM 134,850. A single vehicle of the very sporty 911 Carrera Clubsport, offered from 1987 to 1989, is delivered as a Targa. In the last model year of the G-model of the Porsche 911 (1989), 104 Porsche 911 Turbo Targa are still manufactured. Of a total of 196,932 Porsche 911s of the G-model produced, a total of 57,349 are Targa. The percentage of the Targa in the 911 model mix thus corresponds to 29.2%.

The Porsche Targa of the Type 964

With the launch of the Porsche 911 Type 964 in 1989, the 911 Targa was also available with all-wheel drive for the first time in its history. At the same time, the 964 Targa was the last 911 Targa to have the classic removable Targa roof with safety bar and glass rear window; the successor models since the 993 Targa have been and are only offered with the panoramic glass roof. Both the Carrera 2 Targa and the 911 Carrera 4 Targa were powered by a 3600 cm³, 184 kW (250 PS) six-cylinder boxer engine , which according to DIN 1,450 kg sports car in 5.7 seconds to 100 km / h and accelerated to a maximum of 260 km / h. From 1989 to 1993 a total of 4,863 units (1,329 Carrera 4 Targa and 3,534 Carrera 2 Targa) were sold at basic prices from 108,700 DM (Carrera 2 Targa, 1989) and 121,800 DM (Carrera 4 Targa, 1989).

The 993 type Porsche Targa

With the fourth generation of the Porsche 911 Targa, a completely new Targa roof concept based on the Porsche 911 Type 993 with an electrically operated, large-area panoramic glass roof was introduced in late summer 1995 , which replaced the combination of safety bar and removable roof part used up to the Porsche 964 Targa . As the basis for the 993 Targa, Porsche used the body shell of the 993 Cabriolet , but with mounting points modified to accommodate the glass roof. The glass roof itself, which consists of three glass elements, a wind deflector and a movable roof as well as a rear window, is already pre-assembled as a complete unit and is securely fixed to the body by screwing and gluing in the final assembly of the vehicle . Up to 1997, a total of 4,583 Porsche 993 Targa were sold at basic prices from DM 145,000 (as of August 1995).

The Porsche Targa of the type 996

After almost 5,000 units of the Porsche 993 Targa had been sold, the Porsche 996 Targa appeared in August 2001, like all models of the Porsche 996 introduced in 1996 with a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer, and thus the first water-cooled 911 Targa. The construction of its panorama glass roof has not changed significantly compared to the 993 Targa; it is still made up of three glass elements made of green-tinted three-layer safety laminated glass . As before, an electrically operated roller blind can be extended to protect against strong sunlight or cold. One major innovation can be found in the 996 Targa: The fold-up rear window, which unlocks electrically for loading and unloading the rear shelf, but for safety reasons can only be opened when the glass roof is closed. Ferry Porsche had the idea for such a tailgate back in the 1960s, but at the time it was not clear whether this construction could be kept tight over the long term. The engine of the Targa is identical to the 996 Carrera (3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer naturally aspirated engine with 235 kW / 320 hp); in addition to the 6-speed manual transmission, the 5-speed Tiptronic S is available as an alternative. The basic prices began at 159,041 DM for the 996 Targa with manual transmission and 164,656 DM for the Targa equipped with Tiptronic S.

The 997 type Porsche Targa

In November 2006, the 997 was supplemented by the 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S models, which were supplied exclusively with all-wheel drive for the first time in the history of the Porsche 911 Targa.

Optical differences to the 997 Carrera can be found in particular in the silhouette, which is characterized by the pointed rear side windows and the anodized and polished aluminum trim strips on both sides , which start at the A-pillar and end behind the rear side windows.

In direct comparison with the 911 Targa of the type 996, the glass roof, which consists of special tinted glass, has become 1.9 kg lighter. In the interior, an electrically operated sun protection blind prevents excessive solar radiation on the passengers as well as excessive heating or cooling of the passenger compartment.

The Porsche 997.1 Targa is available in the model versions Targa 4 with 239 kW (325 PS) and Targa 4S with 261 kW (355 PS). The basic prices start at 100,770.00 euros for the 911 Targa 4 and 113,860.00 euros for the 22 kW (30 PS) more powerful 911 Targa 4S.

For the “sporty, self-confident […] design” of the Porsche 997 Targa models, Porsche received the “red dot award: product design 2007” from the Design Center North Rhine Westphalia .

The 991 type Porsche Targa

Porsche 911 Targa of type 991 (2014)

On January 14, 2014, the Porsche 911 Targa (Type 991) was presented at the Detroit motor show. It is characterized by a classic soft top, fixed roll bar and one-piece rear window, as has been produced from the first Targa model up to the 964 series. Porsche is promoting this model with the slogan “Imagine you meet your childhood sweetheart again. And it has become even more beautiful. "

This model has been available since May 10, 2014 in the versions 911 Targa 4, 911 Targa 4S and 911 Targa GTS. The roof section between the A-pillar (windshield) and the targa bar (B-pillar) can be extended automatically, similar to the folding roof convertibles from other manufacturers: the entire rear window module is first extended to the rear. Parts of the targa bar are swiveled out to the left and right so that the targa roof can then be put down behind the emergency seats. The rear window module is finally brought back to its starting position.

The doors are frameless, so that the area between the A and B pillars is completely open, as was the case with the original Targa models.

The base prices are EUR 109,338 for the 911 Targa 4 and EUR 124,094 for the 911 Targa 4S .
