The General Motors / Opel HydroGen3 fuel cell vehicle was used in various demonstration projects around the world and was based on an Opel Zafira A.

The vehicles had a fuel cell from GM with 200 cells and an output of 94 kW. The three-phase asynchronous motor offered 60 kW continuous output.

There were two versions of the HydroGen3, which differed in terms of hydrogen storage.

  • The first version had a 68 liter tank for liquid hydrogen. These 4.8 kg of hydrogen were sufficient for approx. 400 km.
  • The other version had hydrogen pressure tanks that held about 2.8 kg of hydrogen at 700 bar pressure, which was enough for about 270 km of driving.

The top speed was 160 km / h with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 16 seconds.

Both models of the HydroGen3 have been tested in several copies worldwide.

  • In 2004, two specimens drove a record drive of almost 10,000 km from Hammerfest to Lisbon across Europe.
  • One example won the 2005 Monte Carlo Rally for vehicles with alternative drives with Heinz-Harald Frentzen at the wheel.
  • One example was used by IKEA in the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) demonstration project in Berlin .
  • Additional vehicles were tested by FedEX in Tokyo and the US Postal Service in California.
  • Presentations and test drives were also carried out with specifically painted and branded vehicles in China and South Korea.

In 2006 General Motors presented a successor model, the HydroGen4 .
