Clean Energy Partnership

The Clean Energy Partnership was founded in 2002 as an initiative of the German Federal Ministry of Transport and ten industrial partners at the time. The partnership emerged from the transport energy strategy. From 2008 to 2016, the CEP was funded by the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NIP) and coordinated by the National Organization for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The partners of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP) are working in the sense of a sustainable energy transition across industries on the market activation of mobility with hydrogen and fuel cells.

Project progress

From 2002 to 2016 inclusive, the project was divided into three phases within the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology. The fourth phase began at the beginning of 2017, now without funding, as an amalgamation of currently thirteen companies from the technology, mineral oil, energy and gas industries, as well as major automobile manufacturers.

1st phase

In November 2004 the Clean Energy Partnership was started as a demonstration project in Berlin. In this phase, two public hydrogen filling stations and a fleet of 17 hydrogen cars were operated. Hydrogen is generated locally by electrolysis or LPG reforming (LPG = Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or centrally by steam reforming and liquefaction and its distribution by tanker. Findings on its storage and provision at filling stations, the use of hydrogen in stationary fuel cells and its mobile use as fuel in hydrogen vehicles with fuel cells and internal combustion engines are also tested. The first phase of the project ended on June 30, 2008.

2nd phase

From June 30, 2008 to December 31, 2010, the focus was on increasing the car fleet, expanding the Berlin and Hamburg bus fleets and building new filling stations in Berlin and Hamburg's HafenCity. The CEP is funded by the National Innovation Program for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology.

3rd phase

From January 2011 to 2016 inclusive, the focus was on quality, quantity and distribution. Not only should the vehicle fleet operated in the project be significantly increased, but the H2 filling station network should also be expanded. In addition, the partnership should grow to include additional regions and partners.

4th phase

In the 4th phase, since 2017, the companies organized in the CEP (currently 16) are increasingly devoting themselves to the still open research topics at the vehicle / filling station interface, the tasks for the decarbonization of hydrogen production necessary to achieve the climate protection goals and the expansion of the Hydrogen mobility to other modes of transport (road, rail, water, air).
