Jógvan Arge

Jógvan Arge [ ˈjɛgvan ] (born June 17, 1947 in Tórshavn ) is a Faroese writer, Republican politician and journalist. He was the program director of the Faroese Radio and wrote Faroese history books as an author . Jógvan Arge has been a member of the Tórshavn City Council since 2001 and has been Deputy Mayor for several years.

He is the father of the Faroese athlete Uni Arge and the brother of the politician Magni Arge .

Life

Jógvan was born in 1947 as the son of the radio director Niels Juel Arge (1920–1995) and Petra (* 1922, née Gregersen from Syðrugøta ) in the Faroese capital Tórshavn. He has been married to Marita Súsanna (née Niclasen) since 1965 and has three children with her: Niels Juel Jógvanson (1966), Uni Jógvanson (1971) and Jóhanna (1972).

As early as 1965 he had his first football report on Faroese radio - as a replacement for his father. Since then he has been a regular part of Faroese football and over time has become a legend in this field. His compatriots call him "the best football reporter in the world" today. Fans like to refer to his role in the Faroe Islands-Austria football match in 1990 .

In 1966 Jógvan graduated from high school in Tórshavn in modern language , began a journalistic training in Copenhagen with the Danish news agency Ritzau and studied until 1970 at the journalism college in Aarhus . Immediately afterwards he was employed by his local broadcaster Útvarp Føroya . From 1979 to 1989 he headed the newsroom there and has been program director ever since.

From 1978 to 1980 Jógvan Arge was also president of the Ítróttasamband Føroya (Faroese Sports Association), of which he was deputy head before. He has also been the editor of various magazines.

Since 2001 he has been a local politician for the republican Tjóðveldisflokkurin in the council of the municipality of Tórshavn and was re-elected in 2004 as the most successful candidate. Tórshavn is considered to be the stronghold of this party, and here he was chairman of their youth organization as early as the 1960s. From 2002 to 2004 he was also a member of the Løgting , the state parliament. Jógvan Arge was also Deputy Mayor of Tórshavn from 2005 to 2008. He has held this post again since the end of 2012.

Like his father, Jógvan Arge deals intensively with historical issues of the country in his work. With Teir tóku land, Føroyingar í Grønlandi , he presented a standard work on the history of Faroese relations with Greenland , which his father had begun. It describes the fishing conditions in these arctic waters and u. a. the role of the local settlement Føroyingahavn .

Jógvan Arge has also translated various radio plays by international authors into Faroese.
