Syðrugøta [ ˈsiːɹʊˌgøːta ] ( Danish name : Sydregøte ) is a place in the Faroe Islands in southwest Eysturoy .

Syðrugøta is located at the end of the Gøtuvík fjord on the east coast of the east island of Eysturoy. Syðrugøta has a small sandy beach, which is rare in the Faroe Islands. This is where Tøting's machine knitting factory is located , where traditional wool products are made.

Excavations show that the place has been inhabited since the Viking Age.

Together with the neighboring villages of Gøtugjógv and Norðragøta , it is often just called Gøta. The name Gøta means "road", especially since the main road from Skálafjørður to the settlements further north and east has always run here. The first part of the name says that it is the southern two villages. Gøtugjógv is therefore younger than the other two as a settlement. An old legend says that the parish church originally stood in Syðrugøta, but was then moved to Norðragøta because of a crime. There are still signs that indicate the location of the church and the cemetery at that time. Originally the place had two "býlingar" (districts), namely Niðri við Hús and úti í Grógv, but these have long since grown together.

Around 1860 a new settlement, Undir Gøtueiði , was built on the common land of Syðrugøta and adjacent to Skálafjørður.

Syðrugøta has a large common land, especially since the distance between the northernmost tip of the common land and the town center is quite long. Legend has it that the inhabitants of Syðrugøta had a dwelling with a fireplace in the northernmost tip so that they could spend the night there if they did not manage to get home before dark. A shepherd in the village, called Jákup Dintil, could run extremely fast. He was in this house one evening when suddenly two sheep thieves got in there and saw him. By speed and skill he managed to escape the two culprits, after which he ran home and reported about the theft.

With stormy winds from the east and southeast, strong surf comes up on the coast. Norðragøta is in a rather convenient location, which is why the municipality owned port was built there.

On the postage stamp ( see illustration ) the beach in front of the row of houses can be seen. The G takes place here every summer ! Festival of the ex- Clickhaze musician Jón Tyril , which has been very successful so far. Many young people find their way there, especially since the festival is getting bigger and bigger every year. In the summer of 2005 there were 5,000 guests, which corresponds to a tenth of the Faroese population. There were performances by well-known foreign performers such as Europe and Nephew .
