Elspa Mørkøre

Elspa Mørkøre (born October 22, 1991 in Syðrugøta , Faroe Islands ) is a swimmer in the Faroe Islands. She is the first Faroese woman to ever swim the 100 m freestyle under a minute.

Elspa Mørkøre swims for the club Fuglafjarðar Svimjifelag in Fuglafjørður and holds various national records. She is currently (2007) the best swimmer in the Faroe Islands in eight out of ten styles and distances. Her breakthrough came in 2005 when she broke 25 national records, including one that was over 20 years old. At the junior championships of the Nordic countries in Reykjavík in December 2005, the then 14-year-old won silver, which was considered one of the greatest successes of Faroese swimming up to then. With the relay of the Faroese women at the Island Games 2005 in the Shetland Islands , she won gold.

Elspa Mørkøre was swimmer of the year 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2006/07 in the Faroe Islands.

In January 2006 she was voted Sportswoman of the Year 2005 (Sport Performance of the Year) by the readers of the Dimmalætting newspaper . Their competition that year was top-class: the gymnast Høgni Øster defeated his cancer and won several medals at the Island Games in 2005. The rower Katrin Olsen was runner-up in the Danish four-four , Sørvágs Ítróttarfelag celebrated its 100th anniversary with the national championship title and cup victory in volleyball, and B36 Tórshavn was soccer champion and was able to show the best Faroese performance in club soccer at European level UEFA Cup came one round further. At the award ceremony, sports president Heðin Mortensen described her as a "great role model, not only for swimmers, but for all Faroese athletes". She was nominated again in the 2006 election for athlete, but this time the young chess player Helgi Ziska won .

At the Island Games 2007 in Rhodes , she safely set a new Island Games record over 100 meters back on July 3rd. With the season she won gold twice - also the new Iceland Games records. On July 4th she won gold again on the 200 m back.
