Katrin Olsen (born January 5, 1978 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands ) is a Faroese rowing woman who competed for the Danish national team at the 2008 Olympic Games . She was the first Faroese ever to take part in the Olympic Games.

She is the most famous rower in the Faroe Islands and was twice vice world champion with the Danish four-four . 2007 she received two gold medals overall World Cup champion in the double sculls .

Katrin Olsen was born and raised in the Faroe Islands, but moved to Copenhagen in 1999 to study medicine. She is organized in the Københavns Roklub (Copenhagen Rowing Club) and lives in Lyngby .

Her career began in 1995 in Faroese rowing in the typical Faroese boat at Tórshavner Róðrarfelagið Knørrur . Rowing is a national sport in the Faroe Islands and is also very popular among women and girls. The Faroe boats have no outriggers and no roller seats , but they are seaworthy. Katrin Olsen was twice Faroese champion in the Faroe Islands (1997 and 1999 with the sixth Jarnbardur ), but the switch to the international racing rowing boats in Denmark was "almost a shock" according to her own statements. However, her trainer Vagn Nielsen trained her on the unfamiliar outrigger boats, and since 2002 she has been training with the Danish national team.

The silver medal with the Danish double scull at the 2005 World Rowing Championships in Gifu , Japan , made her a star in the Faroe Islands. She was able to defend this place with the Danish women at the 2006 World Rowing Championships in Eton .

At the Rowing World Cup in Ottensheim, Austria in June 2007, she and her teammate Juliane Elander Rasmussen relegated the reigning world champions Fan Xuefei and Liu Jing to third place in the double scull . On July 15, 2007, Olsen and Rasmussen won the World Cup in Lucerne, becoming the overall 2007 World Cup winners.

In Denmark there have been serious hopes for the first gold at the rowing world championships since 1994 at the 2007 world championships in Munich. As Olsen / Rasmussen came in the top six in the semifinals on August 31, as hoped, the Danish women's double scull was automatically qualified for the 2008 Olympic rowing regatta . Katrin Olsen was the first person from the Faroe Islands to take part in the Olympic Games.

At the World Cup final on September 2nd, Olsen and Rasmussen rowed to third place and finished at the same time as the Germans Berit Carow and Marie-Louise Dräger .

Katrin Olsen also holds the Faroese national record for women over 2000 m on the rowing ergometer .
