Niels Juel Faber Arge (born on August 20, 1920 in Tórshavn ; died on March 5, 1995 ) was a Faroese radio director , writer and politician of the Framburðsfelagið , a political association closely related to the Fólkaflokkurin , which later became the Framburðsflokkurin .

Life

Niels Juel Arge attended secondary school in Tórshavn ( Føroya Millum- og Realskúli ) for five years . The two poets and writers Hans Andrias Djurhuus and Rikard Long were among the teachers who taught him there and who greatly influenced him . He then attended high school in Tórshavn and graduated from school in 1940 ( studentsprógv ). He was one of the first to graduate from Føroya studentaskúli , which had been founded three years earlier . After that he initially took up various occupations due to the war. He also helped out at times in his father's bus company and, due to the war-related shortage of teachers, worked for some time as an assistant teacher in Mykines . The secluded island with its narrative culture left a lasting impression on him. After the war, he sat on the Tórshavn municipal council from 1949 to 1952 and was deputy mayor of the Faroese capital from 1949 to 1951.

In 1957, however, he was given a permanent position in the newly created Útvarp Føroya and was its director for many years from 1960 to 1990.

As a writer he wrote numerous radio plays and wrote his first book in 1977 with the title Argjamenn . It is a story of the place Argir , where his father came from. He wrote the local history on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the resettlement in 1978. An ancestor of Niels Juel Arge had bought the place in 1828. Argir was the home of lepers until the middle of the 18th century .

Further works were to follow, with historical topics remaining his main passion. Niels Juel Arge wrote a total of 18 books in the remaining 18 years up to his death. In 1985 he received the Faroese Literature Prize . The year before, he was awarded a Knight's Cross by the Danish Queen, making him a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog .

family

Niels Juel Arge was the son of the bus operator Óli Arge, born in Argir, and his wife Malla, nee. Johannesen, from Vestmanna . At the end of November 1945 Niels Juel married his wife Petra, née Gregersen, from Syðrugøta . The couple lived in Tórshavn with their five children.
