Location of Skarvanes

Skarvanes [ ˈskaɹvaneːs ] ( Danish : Skarvenæs ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the west coast of the island of Sandoy opposite the island of Skúvoy .

Skarvanes, together with the towns of Húsavík and Dalur in the east, forms the above-mentioned municipality and at the same time forms the southern part of the island.

The settlement dates back to around 1500. It faces the southwest, which is why the cornfields there were very productive. The large area of the commons is pretty good, which is why living conditions were not bad despite the fact that the conditions for boat fishing were unfavorable due to frequent surf. Nonetheless, there was emigration and the last person in the village died in 2000. The village was already depopulated, but a family still lives in a valley 2 km north of the village. The houses in the village now serve as summer houses and the like.

The watermill in Skarvanes

Here is a preserved small wooden watermill with the typical grass roof , its type corresponds to the one that can be seen in the open-air museum of the Danish National Museum and also comes from Sandoy.

An ancient sanctuary in Skarvanes is the stone Kyriusteinur . From the stone one had the last view of the old prayer house, which was used until the Reformation in 1538. The old Faroese turned to the stone, muttered a godly Kyrie eleison, and tossed a small stone over their shoulders.

A popular hiking trail leads from Skarvanes to Dalur. Another hiking trail runs parallel to coastal road 37.

Skarvanes is one of the few Faroese villages that did not follow the conversion to street names and house numbers (from 2005) and still use the old names for each individual house.
