history

Syðradalur from afar

Syðradalur is the southernmost place on Kalsoy. It was founded between 1812 and 1816 by the residents of Blankskáli , which had previously been hit and slightly damaged by a huge snow avalanche. Syðradalur is therefore regarded as a new village ( niðursetubygd ). It is assumed, however, that people settled on the site of today's Syðradalur in the 16th century . However, it is not known why the site was later abandoned.

In the course of the 19th century, three more houses were added to the five founding houses, so that around 1900 the village consisted of eight houses and a school that was built in 1886. In the school, which has since closed again, handicraft courses are now offered in spring. In 1966 the place received electricity. In 2009 house numbers and street names were introduced on Kalsoy. Since then there have been three streets in Syðradalur: Dalsgøta, á Bakkanum and Knúksdalur .

Syðradalur is surrounded by high mountains. The 743 m high Botnstindur , the second highest peak on Kalsoy, and the 703 m high Gríslatindur are in the immediate vicinity .

In terms of traffic, Syðradalur is now connected to all other places on the island of Kalsoy by a tunnel system (see list of tunnels in the Faroe Islands ). Bus route 506 serves the route from Syðradalur to Trøllanes .

Furthermore, Syðradalur is called on the ferry connection 56 ( Klaksvík - Syðradalur ) several times a day by the ferry " M / F Sam ".
