Selatrað [ ˈseːlatɹɛa ] ( Danish name : Selletræ ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the south west coast of Eysturoys .

Selatrað is at the end of the road that leads here from Strendur in the south, and on Sundini Sund between Eysturoy and Streymoy . A local thing site, the so-called várting, has been in the vicinity since the Middle Ages . It was first mentioned in writing in 1629, but is undoubtedly older. The place wasn't founded until 1913 , and the church dates from 1927 . It is the first church in the Faroe Islands to be built entirely from concrete . On 27. December 1927, she was ordained.

The medieval execution site Á Gálga by the sea in the west of the village and the striking boulder Tingsteinurin (Thingstein), which is not far from it on a pasture by the sea, are worth seeing . This is where the Várting met, which could also pass death sentences. It is recorded that an execution by hanging was carried out here in 1626.

Another specialty of Selatrað is the forest called Viðarlundin á Selatrað , which was created from 1913 and expanded in 1974. It covers an area of 1.55 hectares and is located a little inland, around 40 m. ü. d. M. Several well-developed walking paths lead through it. Two thirds of the trees are conifers - especially spruce, pine and larch - and one third are deciduous trees, especially maple, alder and birch.

Until the bridge between the two main islands was built in 1975 , the ferry to and from the capital Tórshavn operated here , so that all traffic from there to the east of the archipelago passed through Selatrað.

There is a boy scout center with tent sites for 200 people and a few bedrooms. From here, mountain hikes in the area are also organized.
