The Premyer Liqası 2001/02 was the eleventh season of the top football division of Azerbaijan . Twelve teams played in the first round of the season. The best six teams then played in a championship round, the other six in the relegation round. The season started on August 18, 2001 and ended on June 6, 2002.
FK Şəmkir was at the top of the table at the end of the season, but the championship was not recognized by the AFFA, the Azerbaijani association, as several clubs revolted against Fuad Musayev, the association's president, and the championship ended independently of the association on their own account. UEFA had also refused recognition and did not allow any club to take part in international competitions.
In the first round of the season, the twelve clubs played for participation in the games of the championship finals. This required a placement in the first half of the table. The clubs that were in the second half of the table after the 22nd matchday had to compete against each other in the second half of the season in the relegation round.
The teams in positions seven to eleven from the first round play in a double round against relegation. MFK Araz-Naxçıvan withdrew during the winter break.
