The League of Ireland 1959/60 was the 39th season of the top Irish football league . The defending champions were the Shamrock Rovers .

The Limerick FC won the first two titles in the club history, the second only 20 years later was recovered. As a result, the team qualified for the European Cup of National Champions 1960/61 , but failed there in the preliminary round with 0: 5 and 2: 4 at the Swiss champions BSC Young Boys .

The twelve teams, which also contested the previous season, played against each other twice on 22 match days, divided into a first and a second half. Evergreen United changed its name to Cork Celtic .
